Out of the mouths of babes
- or at least my 4-year-old grandson.

Along the river and through the blight to Nag nog”s house we go.

Usually a visit here finds their journey coming from the west side of Lorain 44053 to the 44052 up West Erie, along the lake , past Lake View Park and the rose gardens – a place of bubbles and giggles

. My grandsons, sitting high in their special protective seats, had a different view on their way to this old house than they did the other day.

As my grandsons travel with their parents, they have heard their mother say from time to time

” are the doors locked this looks like a bad area”

So as they were coming north on Broadway (due to Oberlin Avenue construction) Gavin, as they came out from under the underpass and going the required speed limit, took in his surroundings. He saw, for probably the first time , what we see every day as we do our errands , the people hanging around “waiting for whatever they wait for”, the dreadful state of some of the buildings, the decay and general ambiance that has become “downtown Lorain”
It was just a good job he can’t read THE WELCOMING SIGN ON THE DOOR of a “downtown business” AS IT WAS THAT DAY

the lowrider trucks parked in front of the old Style Center had caught his attention as they slowed even further to turn onto 4th BUT HIS WORDS showed an understanding of his environment .

‘IS THIS A BAD AREA MUM?”

ED NOTE: Complaints have been made re the offensive ( not to all apparently-) Mr. Dye obviously feels his clientage would be comfortable with such a “welcome sign” ) door language . Mr. Dye has been asked to remove the language . Wonder why he didn’t ask the design review Board to OK the door ?

There aren’t laws against obscenities here in Lorain? Why is this taking so long? Absolutely ridiculous, especially when the city “seems” to be making some attempt at jump-starting the downtown area again.

there are obscenity laws – last time I looked was a long long time ago so things may have changed and at that time the “community” deemed what was obscene – in other words “where the bar was set” …. sigh and the bar is being set pretty low around here now as we slowly sink into verbal decay as well as everything else :(

the city and various groups downtown are trying but you can’t put the lipstick on the pig approach this same building you can see from the sidewalk has some ( in my opinion) safety concerns on the 2nd floor at least…..you will see more of that when we take out pictorial walk :)

I am far from a prude, but I contacted the Mayor’s Action Line when I saw this and expressed my opinion that this language is inappropriate for a public building entrance, particularly one on the main street in downtown. I also expressed how nice I thought it would look in the International Parade. And THEN I read the article you linked to and culled this little tidbit from it:
“Dye also is the son of Design Review Board member Kathy Dye, who abstained from voting on his application. Dye (which one, my question) praised the city’s design review process and said Lorain needs a strict code for the city’s aesthetics.”
    Mommy must be so proud.

ya think and there are also alligators that roam the bar from time to time :) hopefully they don’t follow the fish for dinner ;)

Is this Dale Dye’s place? If it is, he should be using the money he used for the door advertising into all of the penalties, fines and liens he has with the courts.

YES Tammy that would be the place…. sports bar.wonder how getting a liquor license works???

Just checked the liquor control board site, there isn’t one in his name or for that address. Of course, he could be working on getting one.

SUCH HATERS, EVERY BUILDING ON BROADWAY HAS ISSUES. WHILE YOU TAKE THIS RUN DOWN BROADWAY I’M GOING TO ALL OF YOUR HOMES. FOR EVERYONES INFORMATION THE LORAIN DESIGN REVIEW BOARD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE INSIDES OF COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS. IF SO WE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A DAILY MEETING. AND YES I AM PROUD OF ANYONE WHO TAKES ON THE HURDLES OF BUYING A OLD BUILDING ON BROADWAY AND PUTS THEIR HEARTS AND SOULS INTO REMODELING AND THEN THERE ARE HATERS THAT ARE JEALOUS THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS TOWN. I, BEING AN OWNER OF A BUILDING ON BROADWAY SINCE 1987 KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO REMODEL AND MAINTAIN AN OLD BUILDING. IT IS A CONSTANT DRAIN TO YOUR POCKET. AND SO WHAT IF YOU DON’T LIKE LOWRIDER TRUCKS. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO DO. WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY? I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO NEED TO GET A LIFE AND GROW UP.

and ms Dye…did you help pick out that snazzy wording on the door? No jealousy here,,,mainly disgust…where are the gators kept? hopefully not where the patronage is.

Hey trying using bigger caps so we know how you really feel. All ways nice to see a mom come to a grown mans defense… OMG…there’s some caps for ya!
