To Blog or not to Blog

January 21, 2008 at 6:53 pm 61 comments

that is the question?

I am in a quandary, I am suffering from WoM withdrawal . I  love the people I was blogging with, I understand and support their point of view, their opinions when we disagree.

I fully appreciate their talent, their diversity their desire to  effect change BUT and there is  always a BUT, I have had a few issues with what is a blog and what responsible writing means to me. And why the hell is it any business of mine anyway ?

There are literally hundreds of wonderful indepth articles on WoM, caring, intelligent, worthwhile, controversial but  credible articles , researched, thought provoking and WoM makes a difference! I know that to be the case.

So why have I stopped contributing? It is the principle of  the thing! All it takes is one to go off on a tangent and write something “because they  can”, bring in a “personal”  attack  to erase years of hard work, the building of trust and credibility – which I believe is what WoM is and was all about.

WoM will tell you the real story, with documentation , indepth reporting of the things that effect the lives of those in Lorain.  It is a wonderful tool for  information , so why have I pulled away from those I care for, respect and admire?

I have been taken to task for my own controversial writings for Veard and putting Mark Stewart in tights

and John Cole and although I don’t intend to defend  my writings- I will say, I have put me in tights too ! (well at least a facsimile). I will and could defend any of the articles I  have written on WoM and elsewhere.

BUT I don’t believe in controversy for controversy sake. I could and would support every  word written, every photo  taken , every opinion  expressed by the contributors to WoM no matter whether I agreed or not.

When I can’t bring myself to  support a “blog  post” by a contributor as being worthwhile or upholding the basic principles I have set as a guideline for myself and it looks like there wouldn’t be any change in thinking, I cannot continue, it isn’t what I am about, it goes against the grain. Readers do not remember all the hard work that goes into these articles, they remember the controversial headline, the “slam ” article. In my own experience of all the over half dozen CRA articles, I wrote for Wom it was the “man in tights” that is  remembered.

Maybe I am just too old set in my ways, maybe the “blog” world and its diversity is too fast moving for old school values. The world has changed and I may have to go the way of the dinosaurs . I cannot justify personal attacks, and when I find myself being the devils advocate more than championing a cause or tilting at windmills then the time has come the walrus said ……………..

Bravo Loraine, I agree with you 100%. There is that fine line we walk on. I believe in having your facts. I also believe just because you can say or do something and it remains within our constitutional right doesn’t always mean it’s o.k.

  • 2. thatwoman  |  January 21, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Thank you Paula my first reader and comment

  • 3. Henery  |  January 21, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Congrats Loraine! Totally with you, as if you didn’t know. And just as Paula said, just ’cause ya can, doesn’t mean ya has ta!

And if ever you need my services as a photographer, you can still enjoy the discounted rate you enjoyed over at WoM. I already miss you.

  • 4. thatwoman  |  January 21, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Thanks Henery.actually I am holding the chair hostage :)…. I have gone round and round and round with my decision because I really do admire every single one of you and what you are doing..but I really feel I want to be responsible for my own writings and actions, good bad or indifferent.I just don’t want to be dependent upon someone going off on tangents and taking me with them. This way I only have my own behaviour to deal with(and that is difficult enough) I would link WoM to this site but I don’t know how 🙂

  • 5. Henery  |  January 21, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I’ll drop ya an email. I’ve already added you to my blogroll at the photogblog.

Thanks Henery I have managed .. just wish they used different terminology I first got confused with the term Blogroll ( thought it said Bogroll ( english for toilet paper or could it be TP ) 🙂

  • 8. Scott Muska  |  January 21, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Loraine I wish you only the best. I have had the opportunity to read your factual and informational articles and will certainly miss them. It is sometimes hard to read through all the junk to find the good. Keep doing what you go. You are a true advocate for many causes and Lorain is certainly thankful to have a hard worker and organizer like you.

  • 9. thatwoman  |  January 21, 2008 at 9:11 pm

as noted by Joe the time stamp is Greenwich Mean Time so in England it is 9:08 as I type this at 4:08 and there is a great pub in Greeenwich so I am leaving the time stamp GMT as that means I can have a drink earlier, get into my pajamas earlier and it will be “tomorrow” sooner

  • 10. thatwoman  |  January 21, 2008 at 9:12 pm

  • 19. Anne Molnar  |  January 22, 2008 at 2:01 am

Lorain, Congratulations. You are one super that woman.

I just want you to know how much I appreciate all that you do for our city to make this a better place to live. All your efforts, time and dedication will not be forgotten.

Thanks for being a sounding board when I need a good friend to vent to.
Good luck Loraine, and keep writing those articles that many enjoy.

I will share the good things happening on council, and new developments as they occur.

I do not plan to support the Olgelbay Norton’s project, nor the rezoning to heavy Industry. There is so much beauty in that area that must be protected.

Try to make the council meeting at 6pm.

    God Bless You. Anne Molnar

  • 20. thatwoman  |  January 22, 2008 at 2:21 am

  • 25. Kelly Boyer Sagert  |  January 22, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Loraine . . . with your superhero cape and with the name of “That Woman,” I can’t help but to think about the Batman theme song, substituting “That Woman” for “Batman.”

    Good luck!

  • 26. thatwoman  |  January 22, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Well Kelly there are some who consider me an “old bat” 🙂

  • 27. CissyMathis  |  January 22, 2008 at 2:08 pm

You are a lady who smiles with her eyes. If your eyes are not smiling, you are not happy.

I wish you luck and happiness with this new venture.

  • 28. Kelly Boyer Sagert  |  January 22, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Thanks Jill, I will be adding “Writes Like She Talks” too 🙂 I am not sure what direction this blog will take and how often the pages will be filled although tomorrow’s post Big Knickers is in the hopper I am not sure Carnival would be interested in that one though 🙂

  • 31. Gloria Ferris  |  January 22, 2008 at 4:00 pm

  • 36. Dave C  |  January 22, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I was going to say, “You go girl!” and “Brava” but someone beat me to it.
I could say, “Tell it like it is!” But you have been doing that all your life.
I am impressed by this litany of support from all your friends and colleagues. That alone should tell you you are doing the right thing. Keep on being “That woman!” We love you for it!

See how much you really are loved Loraine.
Thank you for coming to council last night.

The big job ahead is on Feb.11, I hope many people will attend the public hearing for the stone crushing plant. That river front land must be preserved with all the beauty that God’s creation put there.

The games people play, and think it will go unnoticed.

    Quote for the day:
    From Proverbs 11:5

Ability will enable a man to go to the top, but it takes character to keep him there.

    Have a nice day. Anne

  • 39. thatwoman  |  January 23, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Anne, I have to say last night was something, frustrating for the audience as well as I would think for council people. I had a headache and I am sure I wasn’t alone 😦 Well the new council members surely got initiated in a hurry.
I will be there on the 11th but I also am very interested in what is the Staubach report re the development of the lake and river front . Loraine

    Hello Loraine

I have to say that I wish you all the best in the coming YEARS for your new site. I look forward to reading your comments and FACT based information. It is nice to know there are still some BRAVE souls that tell it like it is.

  • 41. thatwoman  |  January 23, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Thanks Les and I will certainly try to be fact based ..even in my opinions.. and I look to you and others to “police” me..I will be linking to Cops Corner etc. More than ever do we need to look out for this neighborhood called Lorain. Loraine

I went to the school board meeting last night. Jim does a great job as president. He explains everything and questions. Eddie Edwards and Flores were also there.

What a difference and so well organized from previous meetings.

It was mentioned that they may consider having one high school. South View high may be closed. I have many questions as to what they plan to do when the building becomes empty. I also understand that the school enrollment is down, due to the charter schools.

We will wait and see what the plans for the future will be.

  • 45. thatwoman  |  January 24, 2008 at 2:12 pm

I am so pleased you were able to attend as well as Mr. Edwards and Mr. Flores. It is good to see that by holding the meeting other than on the night that council meets our city council people can attend. As you are well aware what effects the city effects the schools and vice versa there has to be a productive partnership and gaining a working knowledge of how each other works and the needs is a step in the right direction.

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
    And by opposing end them?

    Hope you the best,

  • 48. thatwoman  |  January 28, 2008 at 1:08 am

“Readers do not remember all the hard work that goes into these articles, they remember the controversial headline, the ”slam ” article.”

You are 100% correct in that statement. Continue on the high road – Much success!

  • 50. thatwoman  |  February 3, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Thanks Terry I wonder if any know about the High and low road , the high road …..two Highlanders were in an English prison one was released to go back to the Highlands and one was to be hung…. the high road being the main road and the the low road the fairy road or the spirit road ( on the other side of life) so even though the one took the high road to Loch Lomond the other taking the “spirit” road would reach Scotland afore him….. sometimes the high road doesn’t get you there as quickly but in the end it is the better alternative in my opinion Loraine
