I would also suggest checking out any of the blog roll listed on the right hand side. Plenty of reading there as well there are 31 categories that have been written about in the past 7 months on this blog. Have a revist of Lorain’s history but stay away from the CRA unless you are a glutton for punishment 🙂

Comments as of Friday will be turned off so as not to encourage “trolls”

See you in October and I hope the “barnacles removed locally”will be less expensive 🙂

If it’s Wednesday – This must be London!

by Loraine Ritchey

The title of the movie was of course
If it’s Tuesday – this must be Belgium and looking at the itinery we have I certainly hope I at least remember what day it is let alone the country we will be in.

When in Rome– although I have lived here for the majority of my life now – family and friends will tell me when we meet up over drinks at various pubs

well at least you haven’t lost your British accent or sense of humor

Those that know me will tell you unless I am angry or “reading out loud” there is a very limited trace of that accent whilst I am here in Lorain. As for my irreverant sense of British humour I must admit it is not understood a great deal of the time by my American family and friends so I do tend to “censor myself”- so it is with gratitude and a sense of freedom when I can be fully understood by those that share that same sense of humour .

There is a reason my English family don’t hear the American dialect as when I hit Gatwick Airport – there is a a peculiar happening for about a minute I can’t talk at all, whilst the brain clicks over from America and the midwest back to England – words get jumbled , the tongue gets wooly and voila! I am back to being “British”.

That did help out in Morocco as the Americans whilst we were visiting had done something else to upset the middle east. Americans were looked upon with great disdain.

Oh great I thought here we are on holiday (vacation) and we are right in the thick (middle) of it .

So since the British were still OK I had to do “all” the talking and stripped my Americans of their “American personna”- I was never so glad to get out of anywhere when we finally left.

So what is going to happen when I try my “French”? Oh dear I had six years of it in Canada but the dialect and pronounciation was definitely garned from the French Canadian teachers…… I wonder if I will start an international incident ? Oh and then the German and Scottish part of the trip- Kalin dare I even consider Ireland?
and Brian– have I got a place for you – next time you are coming too- then again maybe we should have one in Lorain 🙂 !

So I have decided that “none” the non entity deserves some answers since Brian it was directed to you ! Seems they see you as a kindred spirit 🙂 LETS PLAY WHO IS THE NON ENTITY AND THE CLUES ARE-

1. Here is the first part of NON THE NON ENTITY’S MAIL

“Brian, Loraine conveniently neglected to tell you one thing and answer one of your questions with all her ALL CAPS chest pounding about “three weeks of negotiations.”

Look at the bottom left hand corner of page three of the document. That’s the footer for the Vorys law firm’s Cleveland office that appears on documents they create. The number is a unique identifier for the document in their database.

In short, the city of Lorain’s lawyers wrote it.”

My response YOU SEE NON ENTITY – I wouldn’t have known that- not having any legal training so thanks for pointing that out and even if I did “I” wouldn’t have realized that it WAS the Cleveland law offices of VORYS however how nice that YOU DO- familiar with them are you ?- it would seem so since you recognised the number!
So the city asked their attorneys to work on a document with the other people involved in the litigation …..sorry BUT apart from having to pay the bill because of the County’s posturings in the first place -why is that a problem? I would have expected the attorneys to be involved for the city since I believe the city made the overture.

Oh dear and more legal eagling from the Non Entity

The Commissioners, in either negligent or willful collusion with them, signed it. Do you really think they asked a lot of questions if the lazy county prosecutors didn’t write it? If so, I’ve got a tax abatement retroactive to 1950 I’d like to sell you.

And you and 300,000 other Lorain County residents are about to get screwed if they get away with it.

My response : HMMMMMM you and other Lorain County residents.I take it YOU aren’t a Lorain County resident because you would have said “we” are getting screwed….hmmm there is that English language again and OOOOOO dear “lazy county prosecutors” tch tch not very nice but then you haven’t got the intestinal fortitude to call them out under your own name? So I will just consider the source on that one ( hmmm thats right we are considering the source aren’t we)

Loraine cannot explain why retroactive abatements in the city of Lorain are okay but do not take place ANYWHERE ELSE IN OHIO. Could it be that everyone else gets that they are illegal because state law says that abatements are for new construction or improvements?

I believe you have said that a number times in all the newspaper accounts – nothing new there -my chum- except I never said they are OK just that they can apply for them .as for 1950 I think 1990 would be a better year

“Y’all need to start asking tough questions of your Council people. Are they and their lawyers really so smart? “

My response :Well I don’t know the City’s attorneys won the Supreme Court decision didn’t they ? As for Council people well at least 4 of them worked for the “county” and 3 for the auditor when all this was first going on…. you should ask that question of Mr. Stewart as to their intelligence .

I understand from Loraine’s prior writings that her daughter whose situation she is so obsessed with was one of the few who bought property after the b.s. ordinance passed. Why does Loraine never acknowledge that Auditor Stewart has tried over and over again to address that situation with offers to work this out through a settlement?

MY Response ERRRRRRR excuse me but AUDITOR STEWART TOTALLY IGNORED a registered letter sent October 19th 2007 and has ignored repeated phone calls since then until she received a letter yesterday and guess what it said :

“hostage to the other homeowners who did nothing to earn an abatement?” OOOPPS SO SORRY !!! THAT IS WHAT YOU SAID – FUNNY THAT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT STEWART SAID TOO

Oh Dear I am beginning to see a pattern emerging here ?

I’ve never seen anyone so willing to defend a corrupt system and unable to recognize her own self interest. “The lawyers! It’s all them! They’re evil! Even with millions and millions of dollars at stake, Mark Stewart should have no legal representation and should not spend anything on independent lawyers who are beholden to the city of Lorain political machine! He’s a bad man! City officials are angels! Their lawyers (who may have written the goofy legislation that has caused so much trouble!) are geniuses! Mark Provenza is a genius! Not”

Oh dear “knickers in a not ” time well not all lawyers are evil just the ones that use the media to fight their case and the blogs and my taxes to send petulant little letters… – sorry if you took offence I realize that you would want to defend your peers ….Of course some are just down right not worth the money we of Lorain County are paying them _ in my humble opinion.. …they are “losers”
I wonder if Lorain will allow this to be posted in its entirety.

YUP would you like your ISP address listed too!

Now readers lets play the guessing game – who do you think is ? Well one thing is for sure he hasn’t the balls to sign his name

Well I have another one of those email comments 🙂 as the title suggests by obviously another “unknown” who hasn’t got the intestinal fortitude to put their name where their mouth is and a fake email to boot… although the ISP may prove to be quite interesting. …but I may put it up as the language sounds so familiar oh yes where have I read it before ….hmmmm in Stewarts Ode to the Taxpayer…….ah the rythmn of writing. I think I have a Stewart fan in

“Why does Loraine insist on holding her own daughter hostage to the other homeowners who did nothing to earn an abatement?”

Watch this space 🙂

Well that was going to be the premise of the article and once again I would expound upon what I was fed up about in this fair city and with Mon Generale of the Political Posturing . BUT I decided I just couldn’t bring myself to write anymore about what is wrong or what is even right – I am just going to try to make a difference where I can in the next week before “goin fishin” …Oh! to be partying in London this evening in Trafalgar Square as London welcomes the Olympics. SIGH! There is a whole other world out there Lorain so to Mr. Stewart I have this piece of advice that was given to me my late uncle ( said with a British dialect) :

And do you have to pay “property taxes if you live on the water? I rather like this idea and they are doing it down the road a piece
Lake Erie Floating Homes is a revolutionary new concept in waterfront living. This “On The Water” community is located at Lakefront Marina on Lake Erie in Port Clinton, Ohio, a subsidiary of Marinas International. Lake Erie Floating Homes is a revolutionary new concept in waterfront living. By combining a pre-constructed, self-contained home and a floating dock assembly we will put you not just near the water but right on the water.”

Memorandum of Understanding -CRA

Memorandum of understanding

Morning Journal quote:

Subodh Chandra, Stewart’s attorney, said the commissioners’ and city’s proposal was no real settlement agreement and his client was never involved in the negotiations.

No ! it isn’t a settlement Mr. Chandra it is a “Memorandum of Understanding and within that memorandum Stewart is part of the equation I refer to Page 2 section 4 – I do wish you would stop the word smithying – ( course that is pretty lucrative for you isn’t it?) so once again here we go for clarification
the Memorandum of Understanding

Page One

PAGE TWO ( note the paragraph where it has Stewarts involvement ….. some free advice again….

Please note that you are being paid by my tax dollars both you and Mr. Stewart and I have an issue with how this is being handled by you both. Do I have say as your client and as Mr. Stewart’s employer?

If I do then I would ask you both to stop the nonsense and work with your fellow attorneys and county counterparts and stop the wordsmithying and posturing.

I think- therefore I am- Friday

by Loraine Ritchey

I am beginning to think that Lorain actually is instrumental in saving the “print media” of the area. We seem to be able to give them front page news every other day.

We certainly seem to be having our share of “the not so good news” stories in recent days, weeks and months but will it be enough to save the print media? You can’t say we aren’t trying.

It is a sad reflection on this city and county that some of those we elect – let us down- our trust and faith in their ability tarnished once again in the day’s headlines . The only comfort I find from all this ( apart from the fact that the media will be doing a great business) is that for every accusatory headline and political poser there are dozens of people who quietly go about the business of this city and county with professionalism and pride. You won’t hear about them because they are too busy doing a day’s work for a day’s pay and getting on with their lives.

Antisthenes the Cynic

Will the Cynic Among Us please Stand Up

Cynic: as “a faultfinding captious critic” who “believes that human conduct is motivated wholly by self-interest.“Cynical” as “contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives.”

I used to be full of vim and vigour when it came to making a difference and as has been noted here and elsewhere in my writings- I have become jaded and I don’t think I am alone… The other day I sat with a group of people whom I admire and trust but as they were talking about the plans they had -my “dark self” crept in to dampen the enthusiam….

“what the hell” -I thought “you have no right throw a wet blanket on these ideas… these people are trying and if they fail they do so not because you put your oar in and take the hope from them with your negativity

so I sat and smiled and remembered Jean Schaeffer ” Loraine never criticize anything that you aren’t prepared to change”

The individual must not merely wait and criticize, he must defend the cause the best he can. The fate of the world will be such as the world deserves.” Albert Einstein

Packing for Pleasure!!!!
The trip may be a pleasure trip but packing for it certainly isn’t – this day an age of what you can carry – what you can’t – will it be cool- rainy- hot .. and how many days of “big knickers ” to pack before we can do laundry ……

Update on Lorain City Schools Facilities Project

The facilities review committee of the Lorain City Schools met for a final time at 6 p.m. tonight to make a recommendation about whether or not the school system should build one or two new high schools and, if one, at what location. The meeting was held at Frank Jacinto Elementary School and the following committee members were in attendance:

· Committee President Antonio Barrios of CHIP

· Vice President Tracy Isenberg, a parent of Lorain City School students

· Jackie Rogers (NAACP)

· Pam Radke (Fine Arts)

· Gloria Nieto (parent)

· Tom Paterson (trade union representative)

· Mayor Anthony Krasienko

After some discussion, the committee made a three-prong recommendation for the Lorain City Schools Board of Education to consider:

1) Approach the state to ask for enough money to build two high schools; although state officials have already rejected this approach, saying that school enrollment is too low to justify two schools, the committee recommends that we ask for reconsideration. Our school system provides opportunities for a wide range of special needs students, who require smaller teacher-to-student ratios; our need for classroom space is therefore greater than other school districts with similar sized student bodies.

2) If the state rejects this request, then the committee recommends a citizen referendum, wherein voters living in the Lorain City Schools district can provide input – through a vote – as to whether they want one or two schools. If the result is that the community wants two schools, then local taxpayers must vote for a large enough tax increase to pay for one of the high schools.

3) If the state rejects this request and if the citizens will not finance the second school with increased taxes, then the committee recommends that the Lorain City Schools build one high school in a neutral location (not on the grounds of the current Lorain Admiral King High School or Southview High School) and choose new school colors.

The committee also recommended that, whether it is decided to build one new high school or two, that an auditorium(s) be included. To quote my report from two weeks ago, “It should be noted that the school district and/or community must raise those funds separately as the state money cannot be used for auditoriums, other than for the installation of a basic sound system. Interest on bond money for the construction can be used towards this purpose but, if costs overrun on the building project(s), then that interest must be paid back in full.”

The next step in the process is for the board of education to receive the recommendations. They can then choose to accept, reject or modify the recommendations made by the committee.
