Workers take pay cuts; boss accepts $1,700 wage increase By AMANDA DOLASINSKIhttp://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/08/04/news/mj1424064.txt

Urbanek accepted a 3 percent raise, about $1,700, on top of his roughly $58,000 annual salary. Urbanek said this was the first raise he accepted in the 20 years he served on City Council and four years he served as city treasurer.

“It was the first time I did that,” he said. “I am the lowest-paid elected official and department head.”

Currently, Urbanek has not cut his hours. He has to check with the city’s legal department to determine if he is eligible.

“If I can take them, I will,” he said. “If I can’t, I won’t.”

And as a councilman he loved the ore piles too- of course he didn’t have to live with them or behind them or look at them living in the 4th ward !

Yes there were homes of taxpayers behind those lovely vistas- but he thought they were an asset.

Not sure I like the “thinking” of our poorly paid ( said with sarcasm )elected Treasurer- he really is a “treasure”

Don’t quite understand the Journal’s logic regarding his taking the raise actually leading to a lower deficit. Is that because of the concessions of his employees. How in the world can he even try and say he can’t by law not take his raise. He’s the treasurer for crying out loud, does he not know how to write a check to the City of Lorain.

How much did the mayor get for mileage last year? How much was the expense for the city car? Did he declare any of it as a benefit? Just curious!

Well I will see what I can find out – I have some family issues to deal with in the next couple of days – However I can tell you that I believe the Lorain income tax dept has some issues that certainly need to be addressed which is along a different path than this current headline .just takes time for research which I have been sadly lacking lately 🙂

I think the “different path” is something we both might be working on. Give me a call.

The treasurer is an elected official. They are not required to work a certain amount of hours and they get their “salary” even if they don’t show up. Remember the Law director.

I’m going to side with Mr. Urbanek for the sake of discussion. With his staff working less hours, maybe he’s filling all those hours himself and accepting the raise because he’s working 60 hours per work. I don’t know. I’m just speculating.

I take your point however it does not change the fact that he should lead by example if he has the welfare of his staff and the city as part of his elected office. It shows a character flaw to me but then I had seen his “flaws as a council person” for many years…………… just my 2 cents ( all that I have left 🙂

I think we have reached a point where the welfare of the city and the welfare of any department staff are no longer the same.

Well Kalin as I said before it is a case of “I am alright Jack and stuff you and yours” that is the attitude that brings down most things. How do you change that when there is no accountability and not likely to any. I think we are between a rock and a hard place….I suppose we could have a “do the right thing day ” for anyone in government.:)

I don’t really get into American politics ….to be honest I don’t understand the premise of saying one thing doing another..but maybe if a party ( in Lorain for instance ) holds all the majority and has their party members running unopposed then certainly it is that party’s responsibility as “good government and healthy constituents “to make sure that those that run unopposed as part of their party platform are equal to the job and have more than rudimentary intelligence……hopefully they are following that thinking-what say you 🙂

    If I may, a quote from the great Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw;

“It is said that every people has the Government it deserves. It is more to the point that every Government has the electorate it deserves; for the orators of the front bench can edify or debauch an ignorant electorate at will. Thus our democracy moves in a vicious circle of reciprocal worthiness and unworthiness.”

Kalin your great Irish playwright Mr. Shaw also said if memory serves ( emphasis mine)

The British Isles are composed of four races of man

. . . the Scottish, who keep the sabbath–and everything else they can get their hands on.

. . . the Welsh, who pray on their knees–and on their neighbours.

. . . the Irish, who don’t know what they want, but are willing to fight for it anyway.

. . . and the English, who consider themselves a race of self-made men, thereby relieving the almighty of a terrible burden.

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  • […] star of the Lorain County dot com -Lorain Forum- and it seems I have rubbed “HIM” the wrong way – according to our Garbo’s post he is in fact Thomas Urbanek – Yup!!!! that is right […]

Kalin seems Mr. Urbanek aka Garbo has plenty of time to play during working hours so I am not feeling too sorry for him
