Lorain Police Dept- To Protect and Serve

The Lorain Police Dept. recently unveiled a long-awaited memorial to the officers that have given “everything” in the line of duty to their fellow citizens ( and non citizens) of Lorain .

The unspoken and unwritten part of their job description when they swear “to protect and serve” this community means they face the possibility of giving of their lives in performance of that oath.

Officer Fred J. Webber, who was shot Dec. 23, 1923, by a crazed, drunken gunman. Officer Charles Deal, who was killed Nov. 6, 1925, after being struck by a hit-skip driver at an accident scene. Officer George Kirk was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft on March 30, 1944. His death remains a mystery.

That’s how fragile the lives are for those who put on a badge, carry a gun and patrol our streets. That fragility became frighteningly clear this past March 15 when Elyria police Officer James Kerstetter was shot and killed while responding to what he thought was a “routine” call in that city.

It’s important to remember and honor law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. That tribute is being done in a very special and appropriate manner in Lorain.
