ED NOTE: As promised – space on this blog has been given on the LCS issues- a letter from Jim Smith- citizen and also member of the BOE
NOTE: THE MEETING-The Meeting is at 5:00pm at Jacinto.

October 19, 2010

To the Editor,

When the Lorain school board meets on October 20th to decide on approving a ground lease with the Lorain Port Authority all discussions must take place in an open meeting, not in executive session. A full disclosure of all information pertinent to the location must be made at the meeting. And, because the school district is dependent on the good will of the citizens it serves, ample time must be given for public comment.

While there are advantages to building on the river, there also disadvantages. Both must be discussed during the meeting. While the board members have the right to decide on the location, they must also do the right thing. Sometimes public officials forget that there is a difference between what they have the right to do, and the right thing to do. “Do the right thing” is what we ask of our students, it applies to board members as well.

I am looking forward to a full, open and honest discussion prior to making a final decision. That is what the public expects. That is what the public is entitled to.

Jim Smith

Any chance this meeting could be videoed ????

“I am looking forward to a full, open and honest discussion prior to making a final decision.”

the tenor of the public meetings that I have attended certainly would be better shared on the cable channel for all to see!

Well, I attended the meeting. Oh, boy . . .

We learned specifics about the $10.3 million in cuts that will occur if the levy fails. The board voted to build on the riverside site, after Jim Smith explained that we would need, from local funds, approximately $4 million for soil testing and other pre-building issues. I have more specifics in my notes that I can share. But . . . what a mess.

They changed the site of the meeting at the last minute, yes. It was to be at Frank Jacinto but there was a family night event there so it was moved to Charleston.
