TAH DAH FINALLY THEY ARE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE !!!!
Lorain school board member Jim Smith confirmed the 1914 Lorain High School cornerstone that was unearthed last Friday is the original and only cornerstone from the old high school. Smith made the announcement at a school board meeting last night.

When demolition began in May last year, the district gave demolition group DEM/EX a list of items and artifacts to be salvaged. On that list was the cornerstone with the time capsule inside. Chief of Operations Dan DeNicola said the demolition contractor had the cornerstone and knew the district wanted it, but he never delivered it.

http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2010/11/18/news/mj3694265.txtUpdating the update And one more time-seems there is only one corner stone that of the NE corner- which was stored on the Bender property- apparently according to sources- there was a hollowed space in that corner stone ( awaiting a photo) in which the box would have sat. Now somehow the box was removed / fell/ jiggled out from the corner stone and then well you know the rest…………. is this the last chapter on the Corner Stone Caper ………. Ah Ha Watson time to have a cup of tea!!!!!

UPDATE:As time marches on the tale of the two corner stones continues Rona Proudfoot has more on the subject this morning in the Chronicle

Is it the “Corner Stone Caper”
and “History Held Hostage”?

Or just a lucky find “The Time capsule that (Lorain) Forgot”

It’s amazing how two newspapers can report the same piece of infromation and you get two different views of the “story”. Amazing. You are never sure who to believe.

Seems to be a problem within the oversight of the facilities committee/department. Sounds as if there are problems that have been covered up, not made public, not transparent, yet are having a major impact on our district. We really don’t need the types of problems that seem to be plaguing us from contractors not fulfilling their obligations to us and/or others. Would really like to know how much this fiasco is costing our building fund. Why is the director allowing this to continue? Why are we just hearing about it now? Oops, did someone get caught???????

Well it is curious that two papers have two different scenarios but one is telling the oooooo happy happy news item and the other has looked further into the situation and comes out with “more to the story” ……this points out to me at least that it depends on what you read as to the path the editors take to “lead” the public….. you may believe everything you read BUT is there “everything there to be read?” 😉

Why is the information with the state of the contracts etc with the demolition of Lorain High now becoming public knowledge thanks to a time capsule… shouldn’t we have as the people paying for the demolition etc be kept in the loop…….. this information considering it is public monies being used – what would have happened if the time capsule had never been found , would we have to wait until lawsuits were filed to be made aware of what was happening??????? HMMMMMMMMM

Since nobody else will ask the damn question, I will.

    Where’s the OTHER cornerstone?

This “found” one was from the SE corner of the building, buried behind the cafeteria facade.

Where’s the one from the NE corner of the building? The one that everyone saw regularly and has pictures of. To many of us, the ONLY cornerstone we ever knew about. The same one that was carefully removed prior to demolition starting on that section of the building.

Is it being held for ransom on a farm somewhere too?

I don’t know Lisa I am told all wil be revealed at the BOE meeting

a corner stone ( presumably one that people were aware of was stored at the Bender property is this the one possibly held by Demex… call it Corner stone D as requested to be saved by LCS

    – now TA DAH is there yet another corner stone call it corner stone (A) that people were unaware of its existence of and the time capsule was not known to be inside- that was broken open to find a time capsule..

are there two corner stones one NE(D) and one SE (A) and is the NE corner stone)D) corner stone still in the Bender garage? according to the Chronicle

According to DEM/EX owner Ed Fisher, his company was only storing Lorain High materials at the Amherst property owned by Dennis and Cindy Benders, where the the cornerstone and time capsule were found.

The cornerstone, he said, shouldn’t have been unsealed and would have required a lot of effort to get into it.

“It wouldn’t have happened by accident,” he said.

According to Fisher, DEM/EX worked out a deal with Dennis Bender, the father of Joe, who said he discovered the cornerstone and time capsule while working in the backyard on Friday morning. The deal itself is a little confusing, but in the end, DEM/EX has a dump truck from the Benders, and the Benders received stone from DEM/EX. They also agreed to let DEM/EX use a garage for storage, he said.

“They didn’t find it, they didn’t stumble on it. We asked them to secure it because they had a big garage

as I said curiouser and curioser and confusing to boot……. a tale of two cornerstones???????????????? wonder if there was one for the 1870 building sigh…….. better not go there eh? ( very big on time capsules and corner stones back then

I know our guys said they went back out to the Bender’s to get the cornerstone that they had on their property. LCS is allegedly in possession of that stone. The paperwork distributed at the press conference [that all of 4 or 5 people showed up for – guess LCS should have made it known that there would be cookies & lunchmeat, too.] said that this was the SE cornerstone, the one nobody knew about because it was buried behind the cafeteria facade.

“I am told all will be revealed at the BOE meeting”
    This oughta be good.

well m akes sense seems every is talking apples and oranges all though still fruit 🙂 However it has brought into the open the problem with the LHS demolition- hope they use someone else for Iriving 🙂

I only knew about the press conference from Ms. Proudfoot, the C-T reporter, but I could not attend – too bad they couldn’t accommodate people who go to school or work! Oh well. Lots of questions still out there.

So, are we saying that the stone that we are seeing in the news reports was not the one that everyone saw outside the building and has pictures of now? I would be surprised that there were two stones for one construction project…

“All will be revealed at the Board Meeting.” – That’ll be interesting! Keep us all posted. Thanks.

By the way, does anyone know who the gentleman is rolling up the historical documents in the Chronicle’s pictures at the end of their story? I would highly advise he not roll up nearly century old documents once they have been unrolled! Just my 2 cents…

  • 9. thatwoman  |  November 17, 2010 at 7:22 pm

That seems to be the way the story is leading that there were in fact two corner stones…. was it due to one being covered over SE corner and the other a part of the new contruction???NE corner I am thinking that is what they are saying occured. Sorry I don’t recognize the chap but hopefully someone will.

  • 10. thatwoman  |  November 17, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Hold up apparently see update I am now being told there was only one with a hollowed space to hold the box, that was the corner stone at the Bender property being saved for the LCS and the box was removed, fell out or whatever and was found….. OMG what a confusion this is…….. or can it be now the “case of the dancing”men 😉

    …what a tangled web we weave…

  • 12. thatwoman  |  November 17, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Goodness gracious me – what a fiasco- trying to unravel the “rest of the story” – this should have been so simple shouldn’t it …. days and days have gone by and I am curious to see if this is truly the last scenario.. the half story is it or isn’t it did he or didn’t he………… glad they aren’t running anything important like media or school system OH wait???????????

  • 13. colmatt  |  November 18, 2010 at 3:06 am

I thought that I saw the hollowed out spot where the time capsule was located in one of the reports. If I remember correctly, it may have been in the Chronicle’s video on their website from the first article…

  • 14. thatwoman  |  November 19, 2010 at 1:20 pm

This investigation of the Corner Stone Caper and un earthing the rest of the story has taken a week many scenarios and we are talking about lots of people involved..well I am glad that is “sorted” however if it takes this long to get to through the spin of a cornerstone caper just think what else lies beneath …….. 😉

  • […] The tale it continued for more than a bit Nobody wanting to step in the sh-t But the miraculous recovery became a tale of possible skullduggery But again “Nobody knew it was there! […]

  • […] crux of the matter, even in so simple a task, is frustrating and a myriad of the he said /she said! Two newspapers and 5 days to finally get to the bottom of the tale ( and John Cole still got it wrong on Wednesday – […]
