Free Speech Without Fear by Chris Ritchey

ED note… today’s post was supposed to be about good things – positive things as I come into the very emotional month of August and all the emotions that are going to rip me apart. Another anniversary of losing my son- birthdays and anniversary no longer celebrated because it hurts too much. So to get me through I wanted so much to focus on the positive. but I am in mid shrug! From Boards of Education to Elections they have crept into my world and not in a positive way BUT THE PLAYERS ARE ALL INTERTWINED.

As mentioned in Biber/Gilchrist Chronicle (S)tirring the pot post

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/the-biber-gilchrist-chronicle-stirring-the-pot/
Brad Dicken of the Chronicle ( chronicled ) an event that took place at the Lorain County Board of Elections on Thursday evening .

Now we have all been to meetings where the ranters and ravers rant- and for the most part we let them rant their opinions -no matter HOW insulting we sometimes think they are .

NOTE: emphasis mine :

Paul Hill, one of Gilchrist’s supporters, said the elections board looked like a Ku Klux Klan meeting as the board prepared to begin the meeting. The members of the elections board are all white, while Hill is black.

However for Mr. Paul Hill ( A Gilchrist supporter)to equate members of that board to the Klu Klux Klan was demeaning, reprehensible, insulting , patently untrue and definitely brought a racial element to a meeting that was supposed to be about determining where Mr. Robert Gilchrist lives and votes. Mr Hill states in the Chronicle article

Hill later said he was upset because he feels Gilchrist is being singled out for investigation because of his race

How did a meeting to determine the where Mr. Gilchrist should be voting turn into “racial bigotry” accusations toward members of that board – because that is what the Klu Klux Klan stands for and that is what they in essence accused those members of being. .

Could it be 3rd Ward Councilman Tim Howard set the scene to the inflammatory remarks and tone by the email he sent from his Lorain County Community College email address to a mailing list of the 100 men of Lorain at 10:34 that morning?

photo Chronicle Telegram

Mr. Howard has a vested interest in Mr. Gilchrist
he is on the Board of the LCCAA
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2011/07/29/dismissed-employee-files-lawsuit-against-lccaa-head/
and the LCCAA has just hired Mr. Gilchrist
http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2011/07/08/news/mj4777593.txt

The LCCAA’s executive committee will meet Tuesday and discuss salary and financial details, said board President Tim Howard.

“At that point, we expect to make Mr. Gilchrist an offer,” Howard said. “From our perspective it’s going to go very smoothly.”

LCCAA leases their Headstart building from the City of Lorain and of course the City holds the mortgage on their property at 504 Broadway .
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2009/05/19/lorain-acquires-lccaa-mortgages/

The third time was the charm Monday night as City Council authorized city administrators to use $325,000 from the city`s revolving loan fund to purchase two mortgages on buildings housing the Lorain County Community Action Agency.

and

“Who came to whom?” Holcomb said. “No one`s been able to answer that. It kind of concerns me that we`re setting a bad precedent of going out and buying bad assets.”

Gilchrist disagrees.

“We`re buying a debt on this business at a deep discount,” Gilchrist said. “That means we`re keeping (48) workers here in Lorain, and we`re keeping another agency open and a building occupied downtown.”

I was sent a copy of the email and the recipients listed ( I have NOT shown the recipients because obviously one (if not more) were also disturbed by the content of that email and released it into the general population) But I have a copy of that email ( which has also been put on Lorain County dot Com.) MR. PAUL HILL of the Klu KluX KLAN statement was one of the recipients listed – please take note of that!

As is my way I contacted Mr. Howard to make sure he indeed was the writer of the email as upon reading the email I was very concerned as to the “them and us” and the rhetoric of race . I have already walked out recently on one such meeting in Lorain
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/i-walked-out-misrepresentation-political-platform-community-safety-forum/

I wanted an explanation and a chance for Tim Howard to state his thoughts, since not only is he an elected official in Lorain and is employed by Lorain County Community College from where the email originated ( paid by the taxpayer) and to be frank I thought better of him.

This is the jpg body of the email sent to the group members of 100 men of lorain.Click on to enlarge

ED NOTE: Reading this email and you may or may not agree with me- your choice – but this is my take and my opinion :

Councilman Tim Howard 3rd Ward

I was concerned as to the following thoughts of Mr. Howard which I deemed inflammatory.
I have emphasized words/statements about which I am concerned and my reasoning behind my concern

1… this in “OUR” minds is an attempt to discredit “ONE” of “OUR PEOPLE AGAIN” with bull crap.

Concern: the way it reads it is to me another “them and us” scenario – so who is the THEM and who is the US? Seemingly everyone on the email list is of one race – therefore it followed who the US might be.

2. Mr. Howard refers to Chase R and accuses him of breaking FEDERAL law and the political climate in Lorain.

Concern:
Chase Ritenauer won the Democratic Primary for the Mayoral Primary of the City of Lorain. Mr. Howard is also of the same Democratic party therefore I can only see one reason for this statement as to the “equality” imho the statement is based on the color of Mr. Ritenauer’s skin ( white) not on his political party – as to not receiving the same treatment

Mr. Howard also stated, erroneously, as to breaking of Federal Laws ( Hatch Act claims) ( I believe that was NEVER found to be the case) therefore that statement falls into the dis and misinformation category to those on the 100 men of Lorain email list.

3. watching the bull **it process unfold
Concern

Mr. Howard is part of the elections process, he meets the Board of Elections guidelines every time he runs for office – (hopefully representing all segments of the population in his ward)- but when it suits he puts this same agency/ group / government office in a very unflattering and biased light with a definite adversarial tone to his thoughts of the bull **it process.

Councilman Tim Howard 3rd Ward

AS stated , I contacted Mr. Howard on Friday evening after I received the email :

Howard: Hello Tim Howard

Ritchey: Hi Tim this is Loraine Ritchey

Howard : Oh ,( with a very pleasant tone) how are you ?

Ritchey: Well Ok… but I am concerned as to an email supposedly written by you.

Howard: I don’t know what you are talking about.

Ritchey: Did you send an email to an email list of the 100 men about Gilchrist and the Board of Elections?

Howard – Yeah – so??????

Ritchey– then you did send that email?

Howard: what’s your problem I sent it ( tone getting a little less pleasant at this point)

Ritchey : Well I have some concerns…. – then there is one talking over the other-
Howard what , what is your problem so I sent an email, so what –

Ritchey you don’t see that this email, in light of what happened at the meeting of the Board of Elections, is not a problem-

Howard I don’t know what happened

Ritchey : How can you say that…. you were there weren’t you ?

Howard: yes I was there

Ritchey: so the fact the panel was referred to as the Klu Klux Klan……….

Howard: I can’t be held responsible for what people say…….

Ritchey : you don’t think your email may have inflamed the situation……..

Howard : I sent that to support a community leader-

Ritchey: that is not what you wrote let me just read this to you… you said discredit “one of our people” again….. now wha…… over spoken once again

Howard:
I do more for this community
(as the octave level continued to escalate) …… and I interjected

Ritchey: so why then did you send that email about the meeting ?

Howard : to make sure it was fair and just..
Ritchey: can I quote you on that?

Howard: ( note by this time the level of his tone was very raised) you’re not a ****** reporter
Ritchey : talking over the rhetoric no you could say that I am a……

Howard by this time was yelling – loud enough to be heard by my husband ( who was shaking his head and mouthing NOW WHAT ?? )

Mr. Howard
was by this time even louder”YOU WANT TO TAKE ME ON ……. I WARN YOU … YOU DON’T WANT TO DO THAT … YOU DON’T WANT TO GO THERE , YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE ‘ME’ ON, YOU WILL BE SORRY

I hung up….. That is what I get for “checking” 😉

So Mr. Howard I will finish this conversation here on my blog:

I do not appreciate your bullying rhetoric , I do not appreciate your logic or lack thereof, your tone and what I perceive to be inflaming a situation in this city where we have enough problems.

I AM ALREADY SORRY! – sorry for those that inflame, insult, bully and rant to get their objectives met.

I find it very sad to see those traits in an elected official whose very income comes from the support of the taxpayer- one of whom happens to be ME! Therefore Mr. Tim D. Howard this blog bestows upon you the NOTORIOUS OPPONENT OF EXACTITUDE AWARD!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job…you clearly help make the reader understand that e-mail and the conversation and tone that was established.

I remember when I was before council re: the boom thumpers in their boom cars…and he pulled out that race card then too…as he had stated it would be an unfair ord.as it would be primarily directed to the black community, and they would not be able to afford any type of steep fine.
i was flabergasted and really quite speechless…who ever said
anything about black folks blasting the stereo’s. The Ordinace was for anyone who would violate that law. so…i guess this recent behavior of Mr. Howard seems typical, evil, and egotistical. It is that kind of thinking that will keep tensions alive.
I wonder now, if there is anything that can be done re: a councilman of Lorain insighting anger. When I was leaving that meeting, a Mr. Paul Hill was waiting for me. I was taken back that someone ws in my face, spewing negitative verbs, adjectives, and nouns at me. All that I wanted to do was to get into my car and get the hell out of there safely. He kept saying why ..why are you going after an innocent black man.

Mr.Howard, I have some really fine adjectives for you. I detest ever hearing or saying the “N” word….need i say more…your stirring the pot could have got someone hurt, and if someone does at any of these meeting…we (I) will knocking at your door.
You are shameful and a disgrace to the council floor. It was never about race..You made it about race. The same formal complaint was filed against Paul Biber…I guess that was racially movitated too.

    Wow.

Why am I not surprised by this behavior from yet another elected official?

Why am I not surprised that yet someone else has to play the ‘race’ card?

Ever notice that when someone plays the ‘race’ card, they’re the ONLY ones making it about race?

Ever notice that when the ‘race’ card gets played, it’s an attempt to draw attention AWAY from what REALLY happened?

The elected officials in this City make me SICK. No wonder this town is where it is. None of ’em has a clue how to run &$it.

Do you suppose there is some sort of guideline about using your college e-mail account for furthering personal agendas? That account and its use is for college business, not political business. When I worked for an organization that was publicly funded, we had very strict guidelines about our e-mail usage. This e-mail that was sent via LCCC would not fit those use guidelines for a public entity. Mr. Howard should have used his PERSONAL e-mail account for this particular business not a public account. The public and his constituents deserve better than this.

  • 4. Loraine Ritchey  |  August 1, 2011 at 11:21 am

I don’t know Grammy I am not sure what the rules are at LCCC.

and quite frankly I am sick of the bully mentality no matter who they are ……… but what gets me is how quickly the conversation turned “threatening” …….Oh well the games have begun!!!!!!!!!!

  • 5. Grammy  |  August 1, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I totally agree with you. It’s time people stood up to the “bullies” and let them know just because they “think” they have a position of “power and influence”, the power is with the electorate, with every single one of US that uses the ballot box (legally) to accomplish positive things for ourselves and our communities.

I truly hope that the “character” (or lack thereof) of many of Lorain’s elected (and appointed) representatives reaches a far wider VOTING audience prior to November.

What’s happening with LCCAA? I’m hearing there’s a merger with Erie/Huron Action Agencies moving to Lorain. There appears to be some shuffling going on as they are now renting space for the HEAP office and has the 2nd floor been vacated due to the mold, water leaking and the crumbling infrastructure. At $325,000 this was a great deal back then. Just ask Councilman Tim Howard, executive committee president for LCCAA and Robert Gilchrist who also happens to be the president on the board of South Shore Community Development Corporation. Many dirty deals to cometh.

What happened with the old Park Building / Carnegie Library ? Didn’t Com Devel? Gilchrist want it for LCCAA programs/ offices a few months back?????????

  • 9. Grammy  |  August 1, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Maybe we need to create a “No Bully Zone” like they have in schools for our public officials.

  • 10. Loraine Ritchey  |  August 1, 2011 at 9:42 pm

Or at least a NO BULL zone 🙂

  • 11. Grammy  |  August 2, 2011 at 3:54 am

    AMEN!

  • […] I have been following the events of Lorain from behind the “somewhat ” safety of my computer and the phone. I say “somewhat” safe as I have been shouted at berated, insulted, chastised this past month electronically and also through the other link to you in the “other world” by phone. https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/the-duelists-weapons-of-choice-words-and-who-is-your-2nd/ […]
