January 3rd- 2012- Auld Lang Syne- Christopher D. Ritchey

Painting of self - Chris Ritchey

As readers know Susan Boyle’s rendition of Wild Horses has become a very special piece of music in our lives. https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2011/12/03/december-3rd-chris-ritchey-yesterday/

The music for Chris was chosen not only because the words fit so well the story of his life, sung so beautifully and gave comfort at a time when comfort, solace and compassion was denied.

My mother has become especially fond of the music of Susan Boyle and called me into the livingroom to see her sing – I’ve Looked at Life from Both Sides Now. from her latest CD. Once more, as Susan sang, I realized the music reached my heart and touched me again.

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way.

But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall.
I really don’t know clouds at all.

But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I’ve changed.
Something’s lost but something’s gained in living every day.

I’ve looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall.
I really don’t know life at all.

What I do know that as this “new year” starts, the parties held to celebrate the coming of a New Year over and done with – renditions of Auld Land Syne sung with gusto and “wine” – the “old long ago” is never forgotten and not far away.

“The time before” crosses the barrier of grief and enters into our present- a diaphanous mist obscuring the reality of death for just a moment, a breath of a scent fleeting and intangible, an essence of a love that lingers – stronger than those that remain – a love that will not be forgotten and does not forget in the swirling eddies of time – an undying love that comforts, reaches out and touches more powerfully than the greatest music ever written or sung……..
