Three couples sat on the porch of 1139 4th Street- 28 years ago- we were all in our 30’s, idealistic, raising young children. After a few glasses of wine, we naively decided we should do something about “this old neighborhood”- to preserve its history, the lovely homes that were starting to be sliced and diced.

It is now 28 years later and two of the three founding members of Charleston Village Society are drinking their wine elsewhere- no longer in Lorain.

As the 2nd founder left this week , he turned over the early paperwork of our organization. Already depressed as to their leaving , it took a couple of days for me to look over the information. I soon realized we had not made much of a dent in our ambition to preserve the history and integrity of these old homes. (More on that in part two)

Christmas coming to Broadway- Merchants rallying around to get the customers downtown – now where have I heard that before ? No! it wasn’t the latest incarnation of 2015 Light up Lorain- “Winter Fest” – http://lightuplorain.com/. It wasn’t even the 1996 version of Light Up Lorain https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/the-legacy-light-up-lorain-1996/

“I had met, at the end of 1995, with Al Kirchner (Herman Kirchner Furniture) and members of the Downtown Merchants Association. Charleston Village Society, had at that time, been a somewhat viable organization representing Lorain’s oldest neighborhood for half a dozen years. The merchants had decided to move in a different direction wanting to be inclusive of the abutting neighborhood, after all you can’t have a healthy downtown without a healthy neighborhood, something that still holds true today!

Healthy neighborhoods???? In that same front page where Christmas was coming to downtown was the conclusion The housing conditions, and rentals in the city were ” astounding” ( ly bad) “city
The print is hard to read but the cry was there something had to be done!

“City legislation has been offered as the answer to “astounding conditions” found in Lorain housing … Dayton has adopted a law requiring rental permits, something like that might be a solution here”

No! it wasn’t from the meetings held in this part of the 21st Century where multi- property landlords and banks filled council chambers to overflowing and fought against the Point of Sale

These articles made the Lorain Journal. November 1954

Not much has changed it seems in 61 years…….

(Note the headline June 12- 2015- Lorain editorial Morning Journal )- and the quote

Attracting more people to reside in downtown Lorain could be gaining some steam, especially on Broadway

Interesting as I segue to numbers games – “two people” on a blog make mention of looking for rental properties on Broadway and we “could be” gaining some steam” ….

If I have learned one thing in those 28 years – Lorain still looks for success, as did previous generations – finds it in spurts and starts – wants to reinvent herself- and each generation has the answer and it seems a lot of them regurgitated from previous generations!

I have also noticed with each “idea” of what will work in this 21st century -there are seemingly no longer ” checkable facts and figures “ in order to show success……. numbers are thrown out ( without being substantiated and grow with each media account) like so much confetti at a celebration. And sadly not one journalist, citizen, board member , administration, council person asks –
“show me the figures”……. the purveyors of success, base their successes on “figures without foundation”, and we gleefully lap it up because this just might work this time and we are desperate so even two people looking for an apartment warrants an editorial!

I am not being a “hater” here but once deceived numbers wise – twice shy– and the numbers game (https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/morning-journal-lorain-going-going-oops/ )- how is one hit turned into 10 ? How many boards have I been involved with whose budgets are based on over inflated “projected income” ? Yes! been there done that.

Lorain and the numbers game – as an example

Ralph Bruening – Lorain International and the Lorain Port Authority claimed in the Chronicle Telegram 2010-
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com the attendance of 60 thousand was down – they had expected 80 to 90 thousand

I would have thought 60 thousand was a good attendance !

http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/06/27/lorain-international-fest-attendance-down-organizers-blame-the-weather/

LORAIN — A little over 60,000 people attended the Lorain International Festival bazaar this weekend, [ ED. note for the Festival’s three days) according to bazaar coordinator Ralph Bruening.
The number was far below what he’d hoped — 85,000 to 90,000 — and he blamed that on the weather, particularly on Sunday, when he said attendance was only 9,000 to 10,000.

But then last year- 2014 -I read for the three days of the Festival the numbers had increased in 2014 over the previous years to 14,000- with a possible 5,000 on June 29th ( Sunday 2014) making the committee very happy… by my math a possible total figure of 19,000.

So – the headline from last years event should have been….

Lorain International loses over 40 thousand festival attendees over the course of three years….

NO! the 2014 headline in the Morning Journal http://www.morningjournal.com read ATTENDANCE UP from the previous year

http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20140629/lorain-international-festival-closes-with-parade-attendance-up-from-last-year

Nickerson said through Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, almost 14,000 people attended the International Festival.
He estimated 5,000 would show up the night of June 29.[Sunday 2014] The number doesn’t include the entertainers, volunteers and children younger than 12, he said.

I asked last year :

why were they so pleased – considering, if the numbers were correct in 2010, by 2014 they had NOT increased their attendance BUT had lost 2/3 of the people (IF THOSE PREVIOUS FIGURES WERE TO BE BELIEVED)

I was informed:

numbers in previous festivals had been “greatly exaggerated”

hmmmmmmmmm Now I wonder why anyone would do that – marketing to the media perhaps and why didn’t media ask for documentation for those numbers, instead of apparently perpetuating a myth of the math? Are we THAT desperate to show success? I believe the answer to that is YES!

piperres
So forgive me, City of Lorain, Lorain Port Authority if I see the same people of the Port, media etc. giving me numbers re the latest “successes of festivuses“, I have lost my trust in their ability to count
http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20150609/lorain-port-authority-to-collect-7500-rental-fee-for-roverfest

I was told people made $60,000 off of one event for one night last year alone But no one has been forthcoming with the documentation for those numbers ! Instead all I get is the usage of the English language – “appeared” – ” we think”it is possible“could be” and the all encompassing “MAY”

Why don’t we “know”???? and prove the math

Oh well- let us blame it on the Common Core Math and marketing of Lorain !

In the meantime 76 trombones led the big parade

to be continued………..
