2006 – Lorain was dreaming lights on Broadway then and now

There has been much toing and froing ( even on this blog ) with the Broadway Building and a successful downtown.
http://www.chroniclet.com/Local-News/2016/10/11/Lorain-developer-hopes-to-have-fudning-estimate-by-month-s-end.html

I sat at Lorain City Council chambers last evening for the latest discussions as to what was going to happen at 642 Broadway ( United Way)
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2015/04/15/money-for-old-rope-a-taxpayers-question/
and the Broadway Building-

I have aged since Spitzer mothballed the Broadway Building 11 years ago BUT sitting there last night I lost 10 years because I was back in 2006. So here is a reprise of a post I wrote back then on the old WoM Blog when I said then Show me the Money….
Apologies the newspaper links from 2006 have disappeared from the web but at the time they were available – not written in stone apparently but they were there when the article was originally written

or Show Me the Money!

(** note concept drawings courtesy of City of Lorain)
Noun: dosh dósh [Brit] Informal term for money – boodle, bread, cabbage [US], clams [US], dinero [N. Amer], dough, gelt, kale [US], lettuce [US], lolly [Brit], lucre, loot, moolah [N. Amer], pelf, scratch, shekels, simoleons [US], sugar, wampum [N. Amer], moola [N. Amer]
We all have visions of what we would like to see happen in this city by the shore. We have a lakefront begging to be cherished by people with vision, expertise and cash to make it happen. The recent announcement of the Maritime Museum moving to the old Pellet site was a welcome vision.

but like everything in life the concept needs the cash needs to make it a reality.

NOTE: THE MARITIME MUSEUM DID NOT HAPPEN BY 2016

BACK TO 2006
The Baseball stadium and field of dreams is also a vision of some of the community

It has taken by the last count $240,000 to reach the stage where CSU baseball will come and play for a couple or three seasons, once the field is prepared to certain specification, which of course will take more “dosh”. It is hoped by the proponents of the stadium/ field that the ripple effect of having a college team play in Lorain will eventually lead to bigger things – possibly a stadium – professional baseball. Dreams, assumptions , wonderful visions – we have had them all throughout the years.

One has to wonder in 2016 how much this costs us to support in the last 10 years

Streets and Sidewalks Committee Meeting October 23rd,2006

GIVEN: We have not even advertised yet. We are hoping and basing our future on wishes assuming that will take place. We have had fifty years of assumptions that have not paid off in this town. We need to be very cautious otherwise we are mortgaging the residents’ future on a dream. It is one thing to look at things and make educated guesses but it is another to dream…

Then we also have the Heritage Trolley planned to loop around our downtown district

“In order to implement the restoration of the streetcar system in Lorain, OH a Community Improvement Corporation (501-c3) has been formed. This Lorain Street Railway Inc. will be made up of members from the Lorain Port Authority, City of Lorain, Mainstreet Lorain, Chamber of Commerce, Lorain County Metroparks, Developers, Civic Leaders and other persons knowledgeable in the field. The wide range of membership is an indication of the community support behind this project.”

2016 – call it a Street car in Desire only – never happened …….

The Lorain Palace, the grand old lady of Lorain holds a special place in this community – saved from destruction by the vision of the “ladies who lunched”. The latest plans to annex her to the Eagles building with all the performance areas, classrooms for the arts, entertaining in conjunction with the Palace that could entail is definitely a vision close to my heart. The vision is there but very little money.

2016 We are still talking happy talk……

2006

Friday October 13th 2006 (the timing of that announcement didn’t bode well for those of us who are superstitious) found us reading the article “Lorain looks for bright future on the lakefront” Kate Giammarise (Morning Journal)
ores

“Altogether, it’s about two to two and a half miles of waterfront property, amounting to about 100 acres, said Don Romancak, a planner in the city’s Community Development Department. The city and Port Authority say they are partnering to have more land to offer developers”

The Pellet site was home of the “ore piles” and the coal docks – someone else’s “vision” of waterfront development.

”It’s wide open,” Foltin said, adding the development could include condominiums or other housing, retail, recreation, hotels, a conference center, a baseball stadium — or even casino gaming. ”(Having casinos in Lorain) still is near and dear to my heart,” Foltin said. ”Don’t think that door is closed”

2016 NOTE: I should have taken that bet ! because that door hit us in the wallet on his way out of town

The City of Lorain is proposing marketing and requesting RFP’s ( Requests for Proposals) from developers, some locally already have the information (see Agenda packet October 16th – Lorain City Council). Other options such as advertising our acreage nationwide and beyond are on going.
For some the coming together of a vibrant, bustling community can’t come soon enough Chronicle Telegram, October 25th-2006 by Joe Medici

LORAIN — With a Woolworth’s, a J.C. Penney’s, restaurants, movie theaters and dozens of small shops lining Broadway, Lorain’s downtown was once the jewel of the city.

Today, business owners on the city’s main corridor are just looking for ways to keep their doors open
2016 Well at least that still holds true
The people of Lorain may not agree on whose vision is the correct one but there isn’t a single solitary soul in this community that doesn’t want to see “Lorain Alive and Well” with people, housing, entertainment, jobs. That is the “vision” upon which we all agree.
Now we just have to get someone with the creativity, expertise and the financial backing to take our visions, show what is ”do-able with the dosh available” and make them reality. “Oh Say can you SEE??????”

2016 and there we sit 10 years later still polishing our rose coloured glasses and dreamin’ ………..

Lorain – Common Core? values and math? PT 1

wine-bottle

Three couples sat on the porch of 1139 4th Street- 28 years ago- we were all in our 30’s, idealistic, raising young children. After a few glasses of wine, we naively decided we should do something about “this old neighborhood”- to preserve its history, the lovely homes that were starting to be sliced and diced.
http://www.loraincounty.com/charlestonlorai/

It is now 28 years later and two of the three founding members of Charleston Village Society are drinking their wine elsewhere- no longer in Lorain.

As the 2nd founder left this week , he turned over the early paperwork of our organization. Already depressed as to their leaving , it took a couple of days for me to look over the information. I soon realized we had not made much of a dent in our ambition to preserve the history and integrity of these old homes. (More on that in part two)

broadway lights Then I found , thanks to Dan Brady http://danielebrady.blogspot.com/ a file of a newspaper cutting tucked away in one of my desktop files.
.
Christmas coming to Broadway- Merchants rallying around to get the customers downtown – now where have I heard that before ? No! it wasn’t the latest incarnation of 2015 Light up Lorain- “Winter Fest” – http://lightuplorain.com/. It wasn’t even the 1996 version of Light Up Lorain https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/the-legacy-light-up-lorain-1996/

“I had met, at the end of 1995, with Al Kirchner (Herman Kirchner Furniture) and members of the Downtown Merchants Association. Charleston Village Society, had at that time, been a somewhat viable organization representing Lorain’s oldest neighborhood for half a dozen years. The merchants had decided to move in a different direction wanting to be inclusive of the abutting neighborhood, after all you can’t have a healthy downtown without a healthy neighborhood, something that still holds true today!

Healthy neighborhoods???? In that same front page where Christmas was coming to downtown was the conclusion The housing conditions, and rentals in the city were ” astounding” ( ly bad) “city
The print is hard to read but the cry was there something had to be done!

“City legislation has been offered as the answer to “astounding conditions” found in Lorain housing … Dayton has adopted a law requiring rental permits, something like that might be a solution here”

No! it wasn’t from the meetings held in this part of the 21st Century where multi- property landlords and banks filled council chambers to overflowing and fought against the Point of Sale

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/07/09/the-pos-and-nuisance-ordinance-a-lesson-in-history/

These articles made the Lorain Journal. November 1954

Not much has changed it seems in 61 years…….
http://www.morningjournal.com/opinion/20150612/editorial-there-are-endless-possibilities-in-downtown-lorain
(Note the headline June 12- 2015- Lorain editorial Morning Journal )- and the quote

Attracting more people to reside in downtown Lorain could be gaining some steam, especially on Broadway

Interesting as I segue to numbers games – “two people” on a blog make mention of looking for rental properties on Broadway and we “could be” gaining some steam” ….

If I have learned one thing in those 28 years – Lorain still looks for success, as did previous generations – finds it in spurts and starts – wants to reinvent herself- and each generation has the answer and it seems a lot of them regurgitated from previous generations!

I have also noticed with each “idea” of what will work in this 21st century -there are seemingly no longer ” checkable facts and figures “ in order to show success……. numbers are thrown out ( without being substantiated and grow with each media account) like so much confetti at a celebration. And sadly not one journalist, citizen, board member , administration, council person asks –
“show me the figures”……. the purveyors of success, base their successes on “figures without foundation”, and we gleefully lap it up because this just might work this time and we are desperate so even two people looking for an apartment warrants an editorial!

I am not being a “hater” here but once deceived numbers wise – twice shy– and the numbers game (https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/morning-journal-lorain-going-going-oops/ )- how is one hit turned into 10 ? How many boards have I been involved with whose budgets are based on over inflated “projected income” ? Yes! been there done that.

Lorain and the numbers game – as an example

Lorain International 2012 Photo Lisa Miller

Ralph Bruening – Lorain International and the Lorain Port Authority claimed in the Chronicle Telegram 2010-
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com the attendance of 60 thousand was down – they had expected 80 to 90 thousand

I would have thought 60 thousand was a good attendance !

http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/06/27/lorain-international-fest-attendance-down-organizers-blame-the-weather/

LORAIN — A little over 60,000 people attended the Lorain International Festival bazaar this weekend, [ ED. note for the Festival’s three days) according to bazaar coordinator Ralph Bruening.
The number was far below what he’d hoped — 85,000 to 90,000 — and he blamed that on the weather, particularly on Sunday, when he said attendance was only 9,000 to 10,000.

But then last year- 2014 -I read for the three days of the Festival the numbers had increased in 2014 over the previous years to 14,000- with a possible 5,000 on June 29th ( Sunday 2014) making the committee very happy… by my math a possible total figure of 19,000.

So – the headline from last years event should have been….

Lorain International loses over 40 thousand festival attendees over the course of three years….

NO! the 2014 headline in the Morning Journal http://www.morningjournal.com read ATTENDANCE UP from the previous year

http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20140629/lorain-international-festival-closes-with-parade-attendance-up-from-last-year

Nickerson said through Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, almost 14,000 people attended the International Festival.
He estimated 5,000 would show up the night of June 29.[Sunday 2014] The number doesn’t include the entertainers, volunteers and children younger than 12, he said.

I asked last year :

why were they so pleased – considering, if the numbers were correct in 2010, by 2014 they had NOT increased their attendance BUT had lost 2/3 of the people (IF THOSE PREVIOUS FIGURES WERE TO BE BELIEVED)

I was informed:

numbers in previous festivals had been “greatly exaggerated”

hmmmmmmmmm Now I wonder why anyone would do that – marketing to the media perhaps and why didn’t media ask for documentation for those numbers, instead of apparently perpetuating a myth of the math? Are we THAT desperate to show success? I believe the answer to that is YES!

piperres
So forgive me, City of Lorain, Lorain Port Authority if I see the same people of the Port, media etc. giving me numbers re the latest “successes of festivuses“, I have lost my trust in their ability to count
http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20150609/lorain-port-authority-to-collect-7500-rental-fee-for-roverfest

I was told people made $60,000 off of one event for one night last year alone But no one has been forthcoming with the documentation for those numbers ! Instead all I get is the usage of the English language – “appeared” – ” we think”it is possible“could be” and the all encompassing “MAY”

Why don’t we “know”???? and prove the math

Oh well- let us blame it on the Common Core Math and marketing of Lorain !

In the meantime 76 trombones led the big parade

to be continued………..

The time has come , the walrus said – Lorain

City of Lorain

For decades, yes decades, I have been a supporter of Lorain. the story here as to how that came about
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/kinks-past-hyphenated-lorain-loraine-pt-5/

I spent a great deal of my young days and middle age days being “involved”. I met a great many people, learned a great deal about politics ( enough to realize I wanted “nothing to do with parties or the political arena). Running for City Council etc would have been the next logical step for someone so involved in the neighborhood.

I decided early on as an ‘Independent voter” and an independent thinker I could probably do more than by listening to the bosses of any political group. And since I was not a threat politically, I did manage to have a voice through elected officials either Republican or Democrat. I was an Independent before being an Independent was even popular.

This past week I posted on facebook I was “retiring from Lorain” advocacy and interest. Let me clarify, my neighborhood and the organization of Charleston Village will remain a cause but only as it directly affects them and the projects still underway .

surfacing
During my son’s last months and for many months after he passed I had no desire or ambition to be involved in anything. I “hunkered down” with my grief, emotionally dead except to the world of grief. Apathetic as to Lorain, the world, the state , the politics of the day, the blathering , I remained apart. But then slowly ideas from a few of the CVSI Board members and the finishing up of Settlers’ Watch needed attention and I had the information etc. Slowly I started back into Lorain.

My respite however , saw me looking with new eyes and I have realized I am no longer willing to sit through endless meetings , listening to the same things I have listen to for decades seeing study after study collecting dust.

I realized this city is desperate – desperate to reinvent herself, desperate for anyone outside to take notice, her lake and waterfront touted as the silver bullet , trouble is bullets are meant to maim and kill

LELAres

I sat , last month at a meeting with Lake Erie Landlords Association , invited because I had been outspoken as to their multi property owners , they want to change their image ( good luck with that) But as they are one of the most lucrative businesses in Lorain

For instance according to Ms. Carter of the LMHA

“housing choice vouchers alone pump 1.4 MILLION A MONTH
into Lorain County but The City of Lorain gets 64% of that money EVERY MONTH or approximately $900,000.00 PER MONTH COMES INTO THE CITY OF LORAIN-!!!

How about that BIG Business for you – lucrative one would say and that is just the “private” landlords and LLC’s .

they are listened to by attorneys and politicians. My zip code gets more in funding for housing vouchers than the whole city of Elyria.
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/grenade-and-garbage-lorain-landlords-swatted/

I realized it is going to take a more effort and more voices than just a few to change the status quo with that aspect of Lorain and I am not prepared any longer to even try. But I had an epiphany of sorts at that meeting.

Kent Sutton

Kent Sutton

As the age-old question, at all these vision meetings and discussions of Lorain was invariably asked by Kent Sutton

“What do you think is Lorain’s greatest asset”

Of course as always it was –

The lake, the waterfront, the port, Lakeview Park

and as the question got to me -I stopped -to think – in year’s past I would have rattled off an answer but this time as Kent Sutton waited for his answer – none was forthcoming –

the lake, the waterfront and various reincarnations of that “hope” ( spoken for decades) had culminated in the month before in a desperate bid for attention from the “outer world”( the one with expendable income) and found the Lorain Port Authority , City of Lorain, and Lorain consortium and downtown businesses ignoring their own “laws”

obscenityres

in order to allow an event that showcased debauchery, objectification of woman, drunks, breasts, showcasing other parts of the anatomy male and female and vomit – if that is the voice of the majority who am I to say naaaaaaay

( see videos here)
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/08/10/freedom-of-speech-usa-really-pt-3/

This was done so the City of Lorain and Lorain Port Authority could bring in more of the same and were proud of the fact they had corralled the “party animals” in one place. Lorain’s claim to success we can keep them sectioned so bring forth your beers ( literally) .

However , I said to those gathered Lorain’s asset was her people, although I realized I no longer meant it , just so they would move on to the next person at the table. The next in line said her history – I cringed knowing Lorain’s history was history for the most part.

1880 map
You will find her history in a couple of buildings, such as the Moore House and the New Lorain Historical Society Museum- Carnegie Library ( artifacts, pictures, mementos pieces parts ) The Lorain Lighthouse thankfully still standing .

– you will NOT find her history intact and revered on any of the streets you walk down.
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/history-demoed-another-rehabbed-pt3/

I listened to the voices and the same concerns and ideas I have listened to in a surreal realization I had been here before too many times. I realized I no longer believed in this tired desperate city enough to try ……. and she doesn’t need another critic who isn’t prepared to help her…

Excerpt from The Walrus and the Carpenter – Lewis Carroll

The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright–
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done–
“It’s very rude of him,” she said,
To come and spoil the fun!”

Community Standards

Here we are back to the beginning and the “perception” that one has the right to share an opinion. The right to opine something that doesn’t sit well with a vocal majority- especially here in Lorain it seems. I have been around this block too many times to go on . Who is Watching the Watcher
( circa 2002)
You can read a lot here in back posts. I am not going to chew the cud twice,

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/10/13/non-quixote-tired-of-tilting-at-windmills/
because NONE OF WHAT I WRITE , ESPECIALLY ON THIS, WILL MAKE ONE BIT OF DIFFERENCE .

cole Ah this blog- it’s very name- THAT WOMAN , the monika given to me by, the now deceased Morning Journal Editor, John Cole. He took issue with me because I disagreed and he front paged “me” home address and all — using his newspaper’s clout when I “dared” come out against the big four – Foltin- Prudoff- Veard – and Cole when they wanted to put “condos” in what is known as Veterans Park- Lorain’s public green space since 1807-
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/veterans-memorial-park-fini/

I wonder what would have happened had those condos been built ? More section 8 housing downtown perhaps. Don’t scoff – Section 8 or now under the new more acceptable nicey nice name Housing Choice ( Vouchers) is very, very big business in Lorain and especially in the 44052!

For instance according to Ms. Carter of the LMHA

“housing choice vouchers alone pump 1.4 MILLION A MONTH
into Lorain County but The City of Lorain gets 64% of that money EVERY MONTH or approximately $900,000.00 PER MONTH COMES INTO THE CITY OF LORAIN-!!!

but The City of Lorain gets 64% of that money EVERY MONTH or approximately $900,000.00 PER MONTH COMES INTO THE CITY OF LORAIN-!!!
How about that? BIG Business at work for you – lucrative one would say and that is just the “private” landlords and LLC’s

Money-floating
If you look at the stats for the 44052- those landlords , property owners LLC etc are receiving the MOST of all the zip codes in the county. This 44052 zip code is receiving MORE than the WHOLE CITY OF ELYRIA. By my math 3.5 MILLION a year just from one agency. But at least LMHA have “building codes ” and hopefully enforce them , Of course then there are other rentals!
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/category/lorain-multi-property-owners/
You remember THIS area is where the Intelligencer ( members of the Downtown Consortium) want to promote , where the standards of the community are set, the seat of City Government , the “BUSINESS District” of Social Service Agencies, the historic district, the waterfront entertainment district, the 44052 the one place the city can expand and develop within its borders.

BUT far be it from me to point out any concerns about housing, the terrible building stock,
joshes sign
the number of RSO , parolees, the crime stats and wanting those with expendable income be part of the foot traffic. As legitimate, as I believe as those concerns are I would be pilloried as a nay-sayer and fly in the eye of the rose-colored visionaries. Because you see that is what happens ( and I have documented it for years!)

roverfest2014_banner_1200px
Back to Rover Fest!!!. I have no problem with a community setting its own standards, even if that bar is set lower than my “personal preference – vocal majority rules.

When Alex Olejko was in office, his administration brought in an ordinance with regard to obscenity. There was a bruhaha at the time, as I recall- I guess people were not so intimidated as to speaking out back then- that was of course before the “screen name only comments” in the media and internet blossomed into being and the 4th estate was supposed to be balanced .
obscenityres
I wonder is this ordinance still in effect? Was it amended by the electors for the events at Black River Landing as the Lorain Port Authority Board deleted their definition of obscenity for the event? It had to have been because there was all of that and more at the event and the enforcers of the laws were in attendance. – see videos Part three
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/08/10/freedom-of-speech-usa-really-pt-3/
or Google RoverFest 2014.

If I recall correctly , at the time it was decreed by the legal eagles – obscenity was to be determined by the standards of each individual community – hence the NEW standards – brought to you by local business consortium , the Lorain Port Authority and the City of Lorain. and I certainly didn’t see any of the “religious fraternity” objecting.

Objecting??? AKA the naysayers HUH?? you see even IF anyone had wanted to OBJECT to the event and NAY SAYED they were cleverly not given a chanceThe date the contract with the Lorain Port Authority was signed was APRIL- 2nd 2014. The official announcement JUNE 2nd. 2014

Now forgive me for speaking my thoughts, but how could ANYONE say NAY or stop or express concerns as to the “caliber and tone” of this event or the lowering the bar of community standards IT WAS ALREADY A DONE DEAL!!! THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR A DIFFERING OPINION.. no one could say NAY!! ( I believe that is called in cricket “well-played gentlemen “) ( for those in doubt – sarcasm)

But this silly old woman, the neighborhood organization and neighbors had , what we believed, were legitimate concerns. Under our letter head we ‘BEFORE THE EVENT” WANTED TO EXPRESS THOSE CONCERNS TO OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES IN GOVERNMENT- THE TAX PAYER FUNDED LORAIN PORT AUTHORITY ( where the event was being staged ) and the LORAIN POLICE DEPT. Both CVSI letters found here :
First Letter –
CVSI RoverFest request
Follow Up Letter
CVSI Formal request Rover Fest 2014 follow up

Now do forgive me, I always thought, and in fact had to learn to get my US citizenship – it was not only my right by also my duty to contact the representatives of government with any concerns. It is the right to be heard and to speak without fear

“The right to petition is fundamental in a Republic, such as the United States, as a means of protecting public participation in government.”

Our right of concern was seen as a threat and being one of the dreaded naysayers in the media comments as well as the “movers and shakers” of Lorain and by a puffed up potentate of the airways. Who also confused me with another who was voicing concerns- we ( I ) was taken down the “rover road” on the airways). I didn’t listen and didn’t care what was being said about me personally, but I do take issue when the organization that has worked to do something to add to this community was ridiculed and denigrated. There are “closet rover listeners”- and my phone would ring – he said this about you yada yada yada
.
When one city official was told that I was getting a little fed up with the blame game said “ well she shouldn’t have taken on the Howard Stern of Cleveland”

OH puuuuuuuuuulease !!! I have crossed words with 8 administrations and city councils , Congress , mayors outside Lorain , Senators , editors even the BBC in my time – I could care less about a radio show, with the format of bathroom humour, less comical, than a five year old just discovering he is a male.

City of Lorain

ED NOTE: I would be remiss in not thanking the LPD and the City of Lorain who did follow through with the concerns we had with regard to the parking by Eric Barnes Heroes Walk and there were absolutely NO PROBLEMS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD OR AT THE SITE. WHICH WAS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN!!!!!

You would think that was the end of it- ah! no the chest beating began and still continues this morning . The editorials lauding the new success of enterprise. All well and good except, once again anyone who had pointed anything of a concern to them was now the subject of nahnana nah and the nay sayer labeling !

I watched , I listened as at least one person( of the 4 that I know of who voiced their thoughts under their own name) , that person, went ‘against the shock jock” using his own colorful language (deemed acceptable in Lorain now) and terminology and under their own name had ,their place of employment sought out – the fact he had a radio show and the implied threat of using the airways to his advantage against a lone citizen , in agreement or not went against the grain.

Everyone has a right to their opinion in my world, even Shane French . Why should I get back involved in the muck and mire of having an opinion defending the right of those in apparently the minority of Lorain? Did I really want to get back into the fray- ( Part One) NO!
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/08/05/freedom-of-speech-usa-really/

But as I watched the bully beat of on going editorials, letters to the editor been there before , media and facebook comments -my son’s words kept playing over and over in my head .. KNOWING NOTHING I WOULD SAY WOULD CHANGE A DAMNED THING . Why should I ? Because as one person’s opinion is silenced by the weapons of embarrassment, and ridicule- 10 others look and learn the lesson and walk away- and that my friends is the insidious beginning of the death of free speech!

Freedom of Speech – USA- Really??? Pt 3

ED NOTE: Please note , as I predicted some of the Rover Fest material has “disappeared” from You Tube including the ” Sex Positions Game” due to “copy right infringement – you tube” choke choke choke cough cough”-

Yeah, well that is interesting however this “game” consisted of people having to come up with and demonstrate various sexual positions in 69 seconds – Oh dear another one of those not so clever double entendre… so is it the game that is copyrighted- or sex or is revisionist history and selective marketing taking place……. ? the 69 is “ninety six-ed” but then again maybe Rover Fest took out the copyright on sex games 😉

PART THREE – WHO SETS COMMUNITY STANDARDS?
So here I am, an aging community advocate, who has been trying to change the “image” of Lorain’s oldest neighborhood for most of my time living here. But I have also had a share of life “outside” the mistake on the lake. And before Lorainites get offended, that is what was told to me by a US customs agent when I was returning back from a trip to London one year .

What is your destination

” Lorain Ohio-”

What is your business there?

“I live there” –

and then with a smile said Oh the mistake on the lake – why?-

“I am married to an American – I thought the mistake on the lake was Cleveland ” ?

No! he said that was the first mistake.. and stamped my passport .

“Coming from London all things are relative” said I and smiled and walked away !

Ah! to see ourselves as others see us ( paraphrasing Robbie Burns)

In my other existence, having been part of the UK record industry entertainment and promos,
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/kinks-culture-shock-best-of-british-pt-2/
I had to attend various “gigs”- some groups/ bands went off into the sunset, others reinvented themselves time and time again:

The Faces are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces—Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (bass), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)—were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed the Faces .

jock strapres
Yes, it is all passé to this aging activist. The bands that come and go through the decades trying to make the jocks shocked and vice versa are just another wannabe. .
The mosh pit ( of the BRL ) event is not the most recent of happenings

The term mosh came into use in the early 1980s American hardcore scene in Washington, D.C. Early on, the dance was frequently spelled mash in fanzines and record liner notes, but pronounced mosh, as in the 1982 song “Total Mash” by the D.C.-based hardcore band Scream. H.R. of the band Bad Brains, regarded as a band that “put moshing on the map,”

Pogoing attributed to Sid Vicious and the precursor to the 1980’s moshing and mosh pit with body surfing is decades old ( sorry to those that think they are at the forefront of cutting edge)

http://www.biography.com/people/sid-vicious-246010#synopsis

As 1977 came to a close, the Sex Pistols were arguably one of the most famous bands on the planet with vulgarity and obnoxiousness as well as Sid’s hardcore punk personality as the absolute key to their ever growing stature. http://www.biography.com/people/sid-vicious-246010#synopsis

YES! we of the older and jaded generation had the bad boys a long time before the latest money-making bad boys were even in diapers.

The record companies picked up the cost of damage done by the drunken, high , all for a good time audiences . The cost of the trashed hotels – the smoothing over of the police ( due to the amount of pot being smoked), the sex on the rocks ( literally) the schmoozing over the press! That was part of my job – damage control.

So bearing in mind the much-lauded “event” at Black River Landing and the latest incarnation of a “bad boy “ of Cleveland –

Black River Landing

I knew what COULD happen! ( emphasis on COULD) Therefore in my “old” damage control hat and not wanting the overflow of oafishness to effect my neighborhood – a letter was written – and I gave an interview to the Chronicle Telegram as to my concerns.

Anti Political Correctness Ad by Chris Ritchey

Anti Political Correctness Ad by Chris Ritchey

For those concerns and the concerns of the organization (CVSI) I, personally , was held up to ridicule etc on the a “radio spot” and in the comments section – not a problem –I know how the “system works” and I didn’t care that a self-professed shock jock– although astute businessman – was using the yin and yang to add to his “show” and “debate”.

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/06/04/the-old-lady-and-the-not-so-rockin-chair-rover-lorain

However, I was not alone in my thoughts and as things progressed it seemed anyone who had a concern , dislike or thought negatively about the “event”- aka RoverFest 2014– were taken on, insulted and ridiculed in the print media, the radio and elsewhere by, not only rabid fans of Rover, but in the very community of Lorain who were welcoming the thought of a few bucks being tossed their way by the overflow crowd and being “put on the map”!
dog-with-bone-300x300
They were IN MY OPINION ( which I am allowed to have -contrary to some) literally slathering and drooling over the fact 15,000 of the 18-34 male demographics would be “Coming on Downtown “ ( how’s that for a double entendre? ) Morning Glory not withstanding ….

You can find the video – all 25 minutes of singing about defecating – by Googling the title Sgt Poopers or you can scroll down to the last you tube link in this post and see the result of what was deemed acceptable by the Lorain Port Authority!
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com
The authority’s Board of Directors lifted the authority’s ban on “offensive, distasteful or inappropriate” music at the behest of French, according to Rick Novak, authority executive director. “The board was aware that there was going to be obscene language and, in this case, they allowed it,” and with it the rest of the days entertainment what you could see through the smoke 😉

For those of us who “missed” the “entertainment” (at our tax payer funded Black River Landing on July 26th) some videos can be can be found here :
Mosh Pitt and Titties ( not my title)

WARNING these videos are not for some – BUT since the majority of those in business on Broadway- The Intelligencer Waterfront Intelligencer Issue 5 Brewfest Issue
and on the Lorain Port Authority Board ( see contract here )
Roverfest_site_application
as well as the City of Lorain government seemingly have absolutely no problem with the type of “entertainment” and keep the dollars rolling in crowd I am sure they won’t be among the NOT for SOME genre After all why would they ? THEY HAVE SET THE COMMUNITY STANDARD!!!!

Captain Chronicles- Settlers’ Watch

Photo Lisa Miller

Photo Lisa Miller

Every year we have faithfully maintained the carvings by cleaning, filling with special wood filling any problems and sealed them religiously . We always knew the 4 carvings on the tree lawn would have to be cut from their base after a few years.

Photo Mark Teleha

Photo Mark Teleha

You see they were cut from living trees, but the roots would eventually die and the carvings will have to be moved to a concrete base as well as off the tree lawn as the City of Lorain ordinance prohibits anything over a few inches to be placed on tree lawns.

Photo Mark Teleha

Photo Mark Teleha

We hope to be able to tackle that particular project in the spring of 2014.

The Ship Captain , had to be carved off site due to the fact the sewer project took a different turn back in 2007-8 and they bulldozed down the trees earmarked for the Captain and the Eagle.

We began the first carving to coincide with the Bicentennial celebration of Lorain August 2007 and were stopped dead in our tracks just weeks later. We didn’t get the site back until the spring of 2009

diffic

There in lies another “tale” however I am told I shocked the foreman when I arrived on scene as to my “usage of the English language” upon finding the trees in the process of going and gone.where the tree once was

what used to be a tree

I was definitely none too complimentary and any sailor would have been proud of my salty articulation! I managed to draw quite a crowd 🙂
meeting 1

The powers that be at the time , including the “sewer project people” got together and in the end CT Consultants paid for the wood for the carving of The Captain .The Captain was afloat again.

The Captain was ready for placement however, the site was still a construction zone so the Captain had to be stored off site. ( See delivery etc here )

Unfortunately , for some reason after delivery to the host site at Black River Landing he did not get his coat of preservatives. The concrete and fierce sun coming off the concrete caused an issue as he dried too quickly. We could not move him back to 2nd street as we were now dealing with the “finished” construction zone:
left collage

Eventually as volunteers and contributors came together the Captain was back where he belonged,

Photo Mark Teleha

but he was very dry and whilst the other carvings took a gallon of sealer for all 4 he took 2 gallons by himself, he was soaking it up like a sponge. His other problem is he attracts seagulls – these seagulls have a tendency to sit on his hat and poop – that poop eats away at the sealer opening his wood up to the elements and bugs . He has changed over the 4 years he has been on site
Captain age col

Just as the site itself has changed in those 4 years

blooming SW

Once again this Pride Day 2013 , as the weather was favorable, to sealing and cleaning- we did. We noticed the Captain’s Wheel and hat were having some issues, so we pegged the loose stanchion and gave him extra sealer ( 2 coats this time) Unfortunately, just last week I noticed the stanchion on the ground -the wood had rotted, in fact his whole ship’s wheel, was hanging on by a thread he was sounding decidedly hollow. We checked the other carvings they seem to be fine except the root bases of the ones on the tree lawns which is to be expected.

After searching on the internet we found http://conservepoxy.com/ Paul of Conservepoxy spent a great deal of time with me on how the process works and what we need to do. Also Andy from Sherwin Williams came to the site and is also looking for ways to help us for which I am eternally grateful http://www.sherwin-williams.com/
Two little boys colla
Today, thanks to the quick delivery from Paul and Conservepoxy, we spent the morning at Settlers’ Watch giving the Captain injections , stabilizing him – with fingers crossed.

It was a busy day at the Watch, Frank Sipkovsky cleared, pruned, weeded, purchased coffee to toast the power towers coming down and helped me check for any problems on the other carvings . The other “boys” Ernie Ritchey, Don Fugitt operated on the Captain, while the Lorain Dudeshttps://thatwoman.wordpress.com/category/lorain-dude/Gavin and Braedyn planted spring bulbs in the “Children”s Garden” – (future home of the tree lawn lighthouse). Nikki ( their mum) helped them to plant the bulbs right side up and I just watched and worried distracted from my thoughts now and then by the towers being cut away…….

– The POS and Nuisance Ordinance- A lesson in history

POLITICAL

Interesting evening, long , noisy and political theatre at its finest as we crowded into council chambers waiting for the theatricals to begin.

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/the-nuisance-and-point-of-sale-ordinance-lorain/

You can find the Chronicle Telegram’s article by Evan Goodenow herehttp://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2013/07/09/lorain-inspection-law-under-fire/

and the Morning Journal coverage by Rick Payerchin
here
http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2013/07/09/news/doc51db8602d0ef0308096406.txt

We took our places in the audience , watched as the interested parties gathered, note books and in some cases clipboards in hand .

There was a definitely hostility in the air toward “rentals” – probably because most of the rentals dealt with by the property owners who attended are the poor rentals/ sub standard housing and sometimes downright disgraceful rentals.

buy swap sell

However the members of the Lake Erie Landlords Association , the Lorain County Association of Realtors -who had submitted an 8 page letter to the administration etc. with their “concerns”- were well represented .

Mr. Scherach, who was the Law Director back in the day in 1996 when Joseph Koziura proposed a POS had issues then and issues last night
img272

, but by his glad handing and back slapping hello to Kent Sutton

Tenants itching for answers to property’s bug problems- CT Evan Goodenow
http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2013/07/07/tenants-itching-for-answers-to-propertys-bug-problems/

you just knew what he would be saying 😉 and there was no surprise there !

And whilst we are on the subject of way back when– and what ever happened to??? The Chronicle Telegram article of 1996 and Lorain’s Housing Court – seems they were having trouble with our friend George Schneider then hmmmmm wonder how many more properties he has “renovated” since then

housing court

And the banks were represented , well at least one of them First Federal Savings of Lorain by Mr. Michael Brosky

Michael Brosky, vice president and secretary of First Federal Savings of Lorain, said more than 55 percent of loans his bank financed wouldn’t have been possible under the ordinance, because buyers or sellers couldn’t afford repairs. (Chronicle Telegram)

michael-brosky-large

I know Mr. Brosky, he is also the Lorain Port Authority’s attorney. You know that very institution that is trying its damnedest to bring people to downtown Lorain and to my lakefront /riverfront neighborhood, and here was their attorney Mr. Brosky speaking against the ordinance. That is his right of course- depending upon which hat he is wearing .

I have to admit listening to the “twaddle ” because that in my opinion is what he was speaking about his bank being hamstrung and how they help their clients in order to have homeownership and build in money for repairs ( paraphrasing) etc etc. His “sway” to council and the administration sent my blood pressure into the danger levelsangry-face

You see this gentleman stating the positives about his bank who have caused (just in my square block) -in my opinion- helped my property value in taking a nose dive . They , these bank property dumping bureaucrats, are one of the problems we face along with poor rentals, no code enforcement etc. etc. .

I have personally felt the negative ripple effect from First Federal Savings of Lorain decisions and have written about it here
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2012/07/11/banks-banking-on-lorain-business-of-blight-devaluing-lorain/

https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/blight-the-business-of-bank-blight-and-your-chance-to-talk-lorain/

I went to the microphone , although I had said I wasn’t going to , to clarify to Mr. Brosky and co just how my property had been impacted by their apparently poor decision-making mortgages over the past years.

And please don’t even mention the economic downturn because the failures in 2008 and the subprime mortgage crisis are directly due to BANKS and to those managing /buying and selling properties.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subprime_mortgage_crisis

http://useconomy.about.com/od/economicindicators/tp/Subprime-Mortgage-Primer.htm

( and they get bailed out- who is bailing me out from their greed? )
I am sure the glad-handing realtors would agree the market and previous sales in the neighborhood are one of the criteria for the property value of my property .
Dumped

First Federal Savings Lorain in my one block area has sold property on 5th selling in 2003 for $108.500 for the goodly sum in 2012 for $17,500,- the house two doors down $12,500 ( and of course my dumped and demoed house next door.

AND MR. BROSKY HERE IS HOW THE ‘HOME BUYERS FROM YOUR CHEAP AS CHIPS PROPERTY FIXED THAT LEAKING ROOF THEY PURCHASED FROM FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS OF LORAIN- wonder if that would have passed a point of sale inspection
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wonder of that 55% of those loans how many ended up foreclosed and turned into “rentals”. How many of those Lake Erie Landlords are clients? When I checked the LLC’s last week a certain bank was front and center…. for whom does Mr. Brosky speak I wonder?

One of my neighbors ( cited by the nuisance task force for peeling paint) has just put back into his property with landscaping , completely painting his home- more money than First Federal Savings of Lorain sold their property . I suffer , my property suffered and my neighborhood.

The banks have been the problem as well. And if this is the type of banking deals he and First Federal Savings of Lorain will no longer be able to do- then I say HOORAY!!!

And just a word to the wise here

lpa

Lorain Port Authority to have access to the wonders of the riverfront , the jet express, to have your wishes for tourism fulfilled, you have to remember the people have to come through MY neighborhood or past the buildings on Broadway, you might want to talk to the banks of business and to Mr. Brosky ! You see LPA there is a problem you can bank on that and your foot traffic and gentrified customers with expendable income will not tread likely here!

As for the rest of the evening the landlords, realtors and bankers filed out enmasse after the first item on the agenda the PSO. Very few of us were left for the Nuisance Ordinance, although in my opinion it was one of the more important pieces of legislation. You can find the ordinance here http://www.cityoflorain.org/city_council/agendas
July 8th – page 17 of 22

This was sent to full council for passage.

Next Up- We will be continuing our walk down Broadway and how the Design Review Board is “supposed” to work
