A Maritime History – Lorain was not all steel-The Captains

I am a transplant from a sea faring nation. I always wondered why Lorain did not hold her “inland seas” connection dearer to their historical hearts.

Today’s Morning Journal http://www. morning journal.com covered the talk given by one of Charleston Village Society’s http://www.loraincounty.com/charlestonlorai/ Co Chairs- Renee Dore

http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20160928/local-historian-highlights-the-lives-of-lorains-historic-ship-captains

wilford collage

“One of the captains Dore shared information about was Capt. Thomas Wilford. She referred to him as the “steamboat master” and explained how he saved his family from a ship wreck on Lake Superior.
Dore said she learned about Wilford 10 years ago, and is in part how she became interested in the history of the Black River and those who helped establish Lorain, formerly known as Charleston Village.

As I read Rene’s remarks I remembered the night she introduced us to Captain Wilford
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/capt-wilford-a-hero-of-the-inland-seas/
and his connection, how this led to a continuing journey through the seas of Lorain’s maritime history and her lights along the shore …

Words: Henry Burton, 1877.

lights-upon-the-shoreI have reprised the article from February 2008

He has become “my” captain, from the moment Renee Dore came through my front door with his story, this man of the inland sea captivated my imagination and part of my heart.

It all started in frustration and anger -this romance. Charleston Village Executive Board were holding a meeting in my home- we were under threat of blight and had been told that the little park that had been a public green space for two centuries was to make way for “condos”. We were meeting to plan a course of action . What could we do , this small band of neighbors, to show the worthiness of Lorain’s history and this oldest neighborhood, from which Lorain eventually grew, to those that only saw limited revenue for the short term?
the park

As we sat there, Renee mentioned that she had received some papers from a contact at Bowling Green University. Renee, who loves this old neighborhood, played as a child on her streets, and has given back to her three fold, including building a “new” home – Renee's home

hoping to restart a community, had gone in search of a man- a ship’s captain. Her captain may have lived in the house where she lived as a “wee bairn” and in her search through the archives of the Black River Historical Society and the Lorain Public Library, in order to document the stories and the worth of Portside – before it went to the wrecking ball-
Portside sketch click to enlarge
had come across a story of a ship’s captain who had saved his wife, children and crew from a shipwreck.

I remember Renee coming in that evening, full of excitement, even though the meeting was going to be “dour”, as we started reading the old news paper accounts; I came to the overwhelming realization ,that inspite of what we were facing ,I had to chronicle this man’s tale. It is a tale of love, bravery, adventure and humanity, one that my grandfather would’ve described as a “cracking good yarn” .

I persuaded Renee to leave me the documents and started to piece the tale together, my theatrical background switched into overdrive, in my mind I saw the play , the movie that could be made from this…. my creative instincts saw so many possibilities.Charle's Aunt
I kept studying the old black and white photo copy of the man in question, Captain Wilford
I was experiencing deja vu – I know this face, his eyes -why? I am not even from here originally; he was originally from England , but nowhere near where I had lived. Why was this face amongst the old newsprint so familiar? I asked my mother who came over the next day as I was typing “Her Book

“Mum look at this picture what do you think?”

He certainly reminds me of someone but who? – well lets get on with “my memories” mumsince you have nagged me to do this for decades”

and the Captain stayed on the desk.
The days went by and the Captain’s face haunted me, as I typed my mum’s memories of her childhood and young life. I would take a break and look at the photo on top of the printer

“you know me- you know – you know me “

it seemed to accuse but I just couldn’t make the connection.
I eventually got lost in the problems facing Lorain, the root cause
when a phone call took me back to The Captain. It was my very good friend, fellow actor Dave Cotton. Dave and I have gone through the good times and the bad, we laugh and moan together. It was one of those dreary days –

“tell me something good”

he said
Dave, I have just been putting together a story about a sea captain , it would make a great play even a better movie- the visual , the romance , the tragedy, the bravery I just can’t get this guy out of my mind.
Dave hadn’t heard of such a significantly adventurous tale from Lorain’s past and he and his family had lived in the area for generations.
I then went rabbitting on about this Captain Wilford,

That’s funny

said Dave

my great grandmother’s name was Wilford

THE FACE – of course that face -it was David- the moustache , the hair was a little different but the eyes – it WAS DAVID!!!!!

Dave IT IS YOU!!!

David who has known my penchant for the dramatic, laughed and said

” I have never heard of this guy in our family stories or documents” Dave.this is just too coincidental ! You have to look and see

after a couple of days research it was confirmed the heretofore unknown Captain Thomas Wilford was Dave’s great, great uncle.
Dave had passed his home on his way to meetings at the Black River Historical Society , never knowing that he had a connection. Wilford Bartenfeld home
From there the tale continued to grow, in order to raise funds for the Charleston Village Cemetery, Dave, his theatrical talent blessing us, started telling the tale of the shipwreck, and in order to make sure his facts were correct embarked on a journey of his own discovery .
Dave as Captain Wilford

Not only was a remarkable piece of Lorain’s history found, more was uncovered , his wife-Fanny who had had his arms protectvely wrapped around her as the large Canadian ship came out of the fog to slice into their schooner) her own connection to the Civil War
Fanny Gilmore
, her family and Lakeview Park , General Gilmorethe worth of a rental, Wilford house
the people who laid this towns foundations, once again living and breathing as we celebrated the two hundred years .
The fact that the State of Michigan deems the story of the shipwreck and the preservation of the wreck as important to the history of the Inland Seas and the archiver of the Titanic- Ken Marschall has also archived the Osborne but Lorain knew not the worth of her people to the maritime history………
Note to access the photos of the Osborne as she rests at the bottom of Lake Superior – near White Fish Point click here and scroll down

Politics – Park- Reservation- and a Presidential Candidate

window

November 3rd will find the local election upon us- I will be glad when it is over! I suppose the “characters of change” will find something else to rail about subjecting us to their Neolithic form of debate .

I worry for this community, as to the bottom feeding blowhards that have surfaced through the muck and mire of politics. Although, I have to admit some of the you tube antics/ music( music??? may not be the proper description ) and sign placements did give a few chuckles. Pity the characters get in the way of a decent debate ! To be expected I guess, the form of debate around here seems to be of the name calling , concrete and windows type. https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2015/08/23/hurled-through-the-window-retribution-who-done-it-lorain/

I was researching through my back hard drives this morning for something I had saved on what is now known as Veterans Park. You see the little park that has witnessed so much

and barely missed the “wrecking ball” back in 2005 due to “politics” has now been designated a Lorain County Historical Landmark Site .
That little park from whence this city was platted finally has its due!

As I researched through those files, I came across a post from the now defunct WoM Blog. https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/revisionist-history-by-omission/

ED NOTE: I am irritated as I look for items I know were recorded and researched on that old blog – no longer available

. But I did save some things. One such post was written by Scott Bakalar ( and myself) in February 2006, when the then Editor of the Morning Journal John Cole was trying his damnedest to bring senior citizen housing to the little park- he and his cohorts had also tried to give away acreage to the Shawnee and it is all to be found in that WoM post
wordofmouth cole

There is a lot of information in that document , not only about the little park, the wheeling and dealing of politics and a certain Mr. Terry Casey
craig foltinand friends
Mayor Foltin’s email to Terry Casey 2005

Re: John Cole, longtime editor of the local newspaper. “I feel he should be briefed early (even in the next week or two) with the understanding that we are in very early stages and he will be the first to know if anything happens and when it becomes public,” Foltin wrote Oct. 11 in an e-mail to Casey. “He can personally squash any nay-saying and ensure broad community support.” – PD 3/5/05

If nothing else works, the Eastern Shawnee could file an aggressive claim for far more land than they actually need for casinos, threatening the state with millions of dollars in reparations. Then, the tribe could drop the claim in exchange for approval to open casinos.

“So the Indian gaming just gives us a few other options,” says Foltin as casually as if he were discussing dinner plans.

You could almost call that blackmail. And you’d think Foltin would worry about losing his Republican allies. He’s not. “The sense that I’ve gotten is that they aren’t mad at me,” he says. “They understand why I have to do this.

ED NOTE: THEY are presumably Republican Foltin’s political party comrades in arms! I didn’t and never will understand why this community spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to become a “reservation” but apparently the politicians understood!

Starting off a firestorm of wheeling, dealing, controversy and spending of taxpayer’s money. The fact that National Capital One (in whose direction we were pointed) and Terry Casey, spokesperson for National Capital One who had a less than a sterling reputation was never mentioned in the editorial. In fact although Dayton, Cleveland newspapers carried the story of Casey’s “faux paux” I could never find mention of that fact in any of Cole’s Editorials. The fact that National Capital One has pleaded guilty to securities fraud has not had any mention in any editorial I have seen since. And oh yes! the very person to whom Cole’s ability to “squash” was touted was that same Terry Casey in the infamous e-mail from Mayor Foltin.

Now Mr. Casey whose past in my opinion was iffy certainly
casey, terry l – Columbus News Index http://www.columbuslibrary.org

Mr. Casey was the executive director of the Franklin County Republican Party when he fell on his sword and took the blame for a system that laundered campaign contributions and went on to be investigated by two elections agencies.

went on to bigger and greater things –

he was appointed by {our} Ohio Governor Kasich ” For a self-described long-time Republican operative and self-starter like Terry L. Casey, who Gov. Kasich appointed soon after he was sworn-in to lead the state’s Employee Relations Board at a yearly salary of $66,997

Mr. Casey’s filing on May 12, 2014 with the Ohio Ethics Commission lists sources of income that include The Ohio Republican Party, Summit County Republican Party, State of Ohio and Simon Tanger, developers behind the Delaware County outlet mall. Those familiar with Gov. Kasich and his brand of take-no-prisoners politics, understand exactly why he would hire public officials with prior conviction records like Matt Borges and Terry Casey. They’ll do the dirty work.

Hopefully, Gov. Kasich, who is running as a Republican for the President of the United States, looks into the history of his appointees a little closer- should he succeed! Mr. Casey , for one, cost this community a great deal of money and polarized a community – along with the politics and press of the day .

Let the political rhetoric begin a new for November 2016 – but I for one will be glad when Tuesday in Lorain has come and gone!!!!

Yes! the seething, rotting, writhing , distorted views of political pundits comes and goes but a little park survives– hopefully so will the voters sanity – although I must say some seem to have lost it already- their sanity that is 😉

“ON BROADWAY!!!!”

Still stuck in 1991 –
said1991
I didn’t know whether to laugh out loud or cry when I read what I had said in 1991 . I loved living in an “urban setting” where the homes in the neighborhood were not the typical slab homes or the new cookie cutter neighborhoods of the USA.

Maybe because I had lived in a London suburb where I would daily walk to the tube station , shop on the local high street, attend functions within the community- all without that car. I was used to that way of living . How bloody naïve was I to think I was going to find that continuing in Lorain on Broadway.

BUT we, the Charleston Village idiots ( as we had been called on more that one occasion) thought we could help bring back that feeling of Broadway that had been lost .

I was told Broadway in Lorain was at one time reminiscent of the “High Streets” from whence I came.

In 1991 I could do quite a few of those errands- I can no longer do most of them – can’t go to the drug store, shopping????? Luckily I can still go to the Palace- although I have to say the last time I went, Saturday the 20th, upon exiting, we were met by a drunk slumped in a doorway- such a friendly welcoming ambiance.

By 1990 we were “INVOLVED WITH BROADWAY” The City Of Lorain recognized a healthy safe neighborhood brought foot traffic downtown- They held yet another meeting , to which the Village Idiots were invited
leteres
We went and the upshot of those meetings as featured in our May 1990 Newsletter
“Community should have a clear vision of what it wants to become”

I am not sure our “current downtown buildings” fit the vision we had.
But we tried, we got on the bandwagon – after all a bad downtown reflects negatively on the neighborhood and vice versa.

Charleston Village teamed up with the Downtown Lorain Growth Association
Dmares

“We’re also excited over the Charleston Village’s grass roots organization which is banding homeowners together to improve the community-

Yes, even the Morning Journal got involved and would feature a home in Charleston Village every week in its real-estate section:

Homere

OPres

Oh we tried – Charleston Village reached out and we opened our homes for a the Ohio Preservation Statewide Preservation Conference ( a progressive dinner in each home). They came they saw and they were impressed.
I doubt they would have the same thoughts now a quarter of a century later. That lovely Renaissance Inn mentioned in their articles – look at it now

source Morning Journal

source Morning Journal

I could go on.

Downtown Lorain Growth Association – became Mainstreet Lorain 1995/6 ( not then affiliated with the Main Street Program- that came later). Charleston Village was one of the founding members of that new organization and had a seat on its board. Later Mainstreet Lorain did become a MAIN STEET Organization the first in Northern Ohio ( 2000)
Yours truly, ( when times got tough and we didn’t have enough in the kitty to pay for a Director) was the “volunteer” Director for 7 months of Mainstreet Lorain until we saved enough with memberships and grants to pay for another Director. It was during that time (2002) Mainstreet Lorain did not have its contract renewed with the Main Street program. We eventually changed the name to Lorain Growth Corporation http://www.loraingrowth.com/
which is still part of the downtown today.

Oh we cleaned Broadway with the Lorain Litter Council, started the Lorain Arts Council, promoted its events, decorated windows of terrible eyesores of buildings, actually charged people to join us in searching for the Black Pearl as we searched along Broadway and each merchant’s premises , had car shows on Thursday nights- ending up at Scorchers. We worked with the Port and the usage of the land given ( now known as Black River Landing), yes and so much more !

Yes! we have been around the Broadway block for decades and watched the “vision” go “dark”

I admit not having given completely up on Broadway , as a blogger, I have had my say of late.

and https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/on-broadway-downtown-the-44052/

That particular post brought me into combative mode with a member of the Downtown Review Board – remember the one that was put in place to promote preservation in 1987 OH! yes we were there too.

Yes, Cathy Dye – a whole series on my blog where she was the subject matter – the mother of the owner of 418 Broadway which has its problems

dye a tribed

ED. NOTE:
It is my opinion( based upon her emails etc. ) that Mrs. Dye tried to use coercion and intimidation of City of Lorain officials in order to get what she wanted re her son’s building via her position of the Design Review Board , took vindictive action using the Design Review Board moniker and the Lorain Building Dept. It is also my opinion her son’s building, which has been well documented as to its problems, IS one of the problem buildings on Broadway.
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2015/01/08/the-dye-is-set-a-sign-of-trouble-lorain/

A Morning Journal article recently had some quotes as to what was needed on Broadway :
http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20150606/broadway-slow-to-bring-new-residents-to-lorain

ERRRRRRRRR where have I heard this before

Lorain also has a neighborhood of single-family houses immediately west of downtown, so incentives and training could help residents living just a few blocks from Broadway.

• Enforce property and zoning codes.
When run-down properties hurt the values of nearby properties, cities have to force property owners to act, Siegler said.

OH yes! I remember same thing they said in the LAST CENTURY and to add insult to injury Cathy Dye is quoted :

Dye said Lorain should require Broadway building owners to keep the historic and picturesque facades, but give them more freedom to modify the interiors and rear sections of buildings to create usable spaces

SC 2nd floor north
418 Broadway

Be patient.

ED NOTE– sorry but patience has worn thin – a quarter of century of the same rhetoric becomes numbing!!!

Lorain and other cities need a shared vision and a process of gradual action to implement that, Brachman said. She called the approach “strategic incrementalism.”

Revitalization “isn’t going to happen overnight,” she said. “It’s an incremental process.”

OVERNIGHT??????? we have been waiting and working on this for decades! Same old clap trap and so much yada yada yada and regurgitated ideas. And the newspaper decided to go to the “problem people” for the solutions …..now that at least was a was a novel approach………………

So Charleston Village how did we do when it comes down to revitalizing Broadway ?
a resounding FAIL!!!!

Last Thursday I wrote a post on the continuing saga of 418 Broadway, Lorain Ohio https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2015/01/08/the-dye-is-set-a-sign-of-trouble-lorain/ as the Morning Journal had run an article as to the building conditions and the “behavior” of the owner
lcaud
In 2013 this blog brought to the attention of the readers issues happening in our deteriorating “downtown”. Although many people have been trying for years to change the blighted direction of what is known as the Broadway Corridor and more recently “the Waterfront District” the rot, literally, of the buildings has continued. My question in my last post as to the further deterioration of 418 was to the “powers that be”

WHY, if complaints had been made over the many months and years as to the issues with this poster child of a building, did it take so long for the process to start?

It is no secret there were issues with that building and they could be “seen ” from even a cursory sidewalk inspection.

Why didn’t our inspectors, Building Dept. act? Why didn’t the acting head of Community Development ( Rey Carrion – no longer with the city) at the time follow through as to the “signage” situation of that building?

Yesterday, I received a copy of an email sent to “Leon Mason, Director
Department of Building, Housing and Planning- City Of Lorain”.
I was sent a copy of the email because, as you will read, I am pretty much the focus of the ire.

The email in question was sent by Kathy Dye, mother of the owner of the 418 Broadway. Ms. Dye is a long-time member of the Design Review Board in Lorain http://www.cityoflorain.org/economic_community_development/agendas
and herself a business owner on Broadway- Dyes Appliances- 960 Broadway
960 Broadway Schnitzler Block Dyes Appliance

Kathy Dye is no stranger to this blog and in 2013 had her say as to my thoughts etc. which I duly posted and answered to her “all caps rant” and innuendo , name calling and her promise “WHILE YOU TAKE THIS RUN DOWN BROADWAY I’M GOING TO ALL OF YOUR HOMES.

The situation with 418 Broadway and the owners ‘trouble” has once again surfaced this week

and I duly wrote about it. The effect of the recent news had another email from Kathy Dye- I have highlighted the words I find troubling from Ms Dye

Subject: Design review board
Getting pretty sick and tired of Loraine Ritchie running this city with her complaints.

#1 if you and the mayor are going to harrass people you should look at everybody, not just a few chosen people. I can be a bigger bitch than Loraine Ritchie. I know of several things if I spill the beans will cause a huge uproar in this city as well as a large number of law suits. I was previously asked to keep my mouth shut about all of it but my patience is running thin. Just to also let you know the information I know has nothing to do with any previous city employees.

#2, Loraine Ritchie has a lot of “ordinance issues” on the outside of her property, what about the inside?

#3 Loraine Ritchie keeps saying that my son did not get approval for his Kharisma sign. Well when he came before the board, before you came aboard, We gave him a conditional approval if the sign fit the sign board. Well it fit and we sent pictures to Dave Gulden as we were told. Then the uproar came and community development was dissolved and Dave damaged his files, not our fault. So I sent pictures again to Rey Carrion. Whatever happened to them I do not know. So here we still are seeing Loraine running her flapping mouth that the sign was hung illegally and that he was told to remove it. Well that is not the case and I want a letter sent for the approval now. The Building Department was notified months ago that we were still waiting for it.

#4 I understand the mayor is planning to run again. Well after I start sending out my series of letters to all the tv stations, radio stations and newspapers I don’t think it will help his campaign. The ball is now in your hands. If things don’t straighten up immediately with my son and his building the letters will begin next week.

#5 Also I have a question, why did the ex-mayor and your father back in their day refuse to take the mast from Admiral King’s boat that sank and make a memorial here in Lorain?

Remember this is a sitting member of Lorain’s Design Review Board- one has to ask WHY? is she- who wishes to hold hostage a process for which she supposedly “sits” for deny due diligence of that process a member of such a board? There is something wrong with that scenario

I want to address Kathy Dyes comments :
I will skip for the moment to No. 2.

11274
“Loraine Ritchie has a lot of “ordinance issues” on the outside of her property, what about the inside?”

I am unaware of any ordinance issues on the outside of my property and when the homes etc. on 4th street were inspected last year we were not cited for any issues. As for the inside of my home – well I can guarantee not one alligator or unusual pets just Shadow
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Kathy is more than welcome along with any one else to come on in- just call first so I am not in my pajamas. In fact, they have done so twice when this house was on tour for two different homes tours for fundraising.
A childish “tit for tat” methinks!

Style Center Kharisma

Let us address No 3 the dreaded signage . Kathy needs to read the post from the PRESIDENT of the Design Review Board and the explanation – it has been stated clearly enough on this blog – twice-
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/chairman-of-the-design-review-board-responds/
CITYWIDE DESIGN REVIEW GUIDELINES

The board has NOT approved the signage for 418 Broadway as we were not presented with the required submission documentation.

The signage was reviewed and there were conditions that had to be met by Mr. Dye to receive approval. The board has not received the information required for conditional approval. The signage was installed illegally

Now down to the rather strange question to Leon Mason with regard to his father , who at one time was Community Development Director for a few months. No 5
800px-P-Signal_Mast_of_the_USS_Arizona_1
” #5 Also I have a question, why did the ex-mayor and your father back in their day refuse to take the mast from Admiral King’s boat that sank and make a memorial here in Lorain?”

I am not sure what this has to do with anything except her possible use of an innuendo – the lack of thinking and knowledge” leads me to wonder as to “lack of reason”. But that being said let me “educate Ms. Dye on the “history” –

refuse to take the mast from Admiral Kings boat that sunk…

Sorry Ms Dye, you have the wrong end of the mast….. Admiral King’s boat didn’t sink, it was the bombing by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor which caused the sinking of the USS Arizona.

” The battleship USS Arizona (BB 39) was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The superstructure above the waterline was removed soon after the attack. Admiral Earnest H. King, Chief of Naval operations, sent the signal mast to his hometown of Lorain, Ohio. Commander Edwin C. Keyes, a close friend of Adm. King commanded that naval armory in Lorain. https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2012/12/10/and-lorain-said-no-admiral-king-lorain-ohio/

AND Ms Dye there were three mayors involved over a decade when the signal mast was an issue. If you are going to cast veiled aspersions I would suggest you get your facts straight first.!!!!

As petty , erroneous and spiteful the above are, it is in my opinion nothing to what Ms. Dye threatens ( and to me there is no other word for it for me) and tries intimidation of one government official and also the duly elected Mayor of the City of Lorain –

IF the Director of Department of Building, Housing and Planning for the City of Lorain does NOT “straighten up” immediately with my son and his building” letters will be sent to the media which will apparently according to her that will cause adverse publicity to the Mayor’s campaign ( Mr. Mason’s boss”)

What those letters contain can only be guessed at with her initial statement “I can be a bigger bitch than Loraine Ritchie. I know of several things if I spill the beans will cause a huge uproar in this city as well as a large number of law suits. I was previously asked to keep my mouth shut about all of it but my patience is running thin.

I understand the mayor is planning to run again. Well after I start sending out my series of letters to all the tv stations, radio stations and newspapers I don’t think it will help his campaign. The ball is now in your hands. If things don’t straighten up immediately with my son and his building the letters will begin next week.

I find Ms. Dye’s behavior insulting , provocative in the extreme and from board member of the “supposed” unbiased Design Review Board most worrying.

HER son is charged with according to the Morning Journal reporting

“unsafe connections to gas supply lines and rubber hoses being used for natural gas” in the building, according to the police report.
The building’s last natural gas connection ended July 7, 2008, according to the Columbia Gas report. One gas meter in the building showed the building had gas usage totaling $14,469 from August 2010, when Dye took possession of the building, to November last year, according to the report.

It is my interpretation – MS DYE, is stating unless the City of Lorain Director of Building and Planning doesn’t intercede and give “sonny” the all clear then she will send out letters containing “what” ??????knowledge of wrongful doings with the City of Lorain enough to cause lawsuits??? -( What a responsible citizen ( that is sarcasm for those in doubt) ! Hopefully, who ever receives these Diatribes of Dye will fact check because her “record” of getting the facts straight even in this last email is nought for 5!
chec
However, I think I have the answer to my question as to why it takes so long for things to happen in this city, with people like Ms Dye “on board” the City of Lorain had better cross all its T’s and dot its i’s otherwise who knows what vicious, vindictive behaviors will come about.

And to those who wonder why I have retired from “downtown” see above….. However, I have not retired from the truth …… Shhhh listen carefully is that sound you hear the falling of another building on Broadway, the “termagant” of Broadway( aka Ms Dye) or perhaps the power of politics in its death throes ????????

You read about the issues with the building above. There was much too-ing and froing between this blog and the “mother” Kathy Dye ( Design Review Board member) about her son’s building at 418 Broadway. The Morning Journal had a lovely ” positive article” about the sign that apparently shouldn’t have been put up in the first place
http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20130612/lorain-design-review-board-kharisma-to-be-installed-at-style-center-building&template=printart

as we learned later as this blog explored the “sign”
kharisma at night

The board has NOT approved the signage for 418 Broadway as we were not presented with the required submission documentation.

The signage was reviewed and there were conditions that had to be met by Mr. Dye to receive approval. The board has not received the information required for conditional approval. The signage was installed illegally. It is my understanding that the Building and Fire Departments visited the building last Friday. The door signage was not approved and Mr. Dye has been ordered to remove it.

Errr not exactly because that was JULY 25th 2013 It IS still up JAN. 2015. Dye also was running a fabricating shop out of that building…. as per that front door “sign” krisdyefabrication door Now I know the wheels turn slowly and you have to wonder why, when so many complaints were brought to the attention of the ‘powers that be” The building was and is a disgrace to all who have to go down Broadway or do business. Now also in 2013 since Mr. Dye has a very interesting face book page, there were more than the ceilings falling down worries – in fact also in 2013 the powers that be were notified that even if they didn’t have teeth apparently a couple of Dye’s pets did
dyes-aligators

The worry was to this blog and others that an unsuspecting person entering the building ( such as safety forces) might come up against Mr. Dye’s hobbies and business practices

Worrying to those who don’t exactly follow the “Dye” lifestyle However today 18 months later we find according to the Morning Journal Mr. Dye of the sign who was so proud of his “talents

http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20150107/lorain-building-owner-accused-of-illegal-gas-tap

The owner of a building on Broadway was charged with theft for allegedly having an illegal gas tap to heat the structure, according to records from the city of Lorain.
Dale C. “Kris” Dye, 36, also was charged with harboring wild animals and cruelty to animals for allegedly having two alligators or caymans at his building at 418 Broadway, according to court and police records.
On Jan. 7, Dye appeared in Lorain Municipal Court for arraignment, where Judge Thomas J. Elwell Jr. read the charges from the bench. Dye pleaded innocent and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, so Elwell ruled the charges would be bound over to the Lorain County grand jury for consideration

and not to be forgotten

By permission of the warrant, they entered the building to inspect it and found apparent code violations, along with a 4-foot-long alligator and two smaller alligators about 18 inches long, the police report said.

On Nov. 13, 2014, Lorain Chief Building Official Richard Klinar declared the property a “dangerous building” because of “numerous” building and electrical code violations and storage of flammable liquids, according to a letter from Klinar to Dye.
As of Jan. 7, the building did not have a certificate of occupancy, according to records from the Lorain Department of Building, Housing and Planning.
On Dec. 11, 2014, Lorain police also met with an investigator from Columbia Gas of Ohio, who made a report alleging Dye had “unsafe connections to gas supply lines and rubber hoses being used for natural gas” in the building, according to the police report.
,

Amazing it is a wonder things didn’t get “hot ” on that block! However, the Powers that Be cannot say they weren’t warned- this blog warned them in more than one email as to what was happening June 2013

I am glad that finally in November 2014 an inspection was made, but WHY the wait ? This was a dangerous situation and the inspection process ( as it was listed commercial) did not have to follow the same rules as a private residence. Our safety in the neighborhood and “Waterfront District” was compromised. The animals in question suffered due to the lifestyle and worse yet the City did not enforce their own signage ordinance through the Design Review Board WHY????? He was given so long to take it down , never happened and Rey Carrion the Community Development head at the timea ssured me in an email that was happening. You can’t enforce codes “willy nilly” by selective enforcement –

However as Mr. Dye wrote at the time of the “sign” and his “club/ fabricating building in response to a well-wisher

Kris Dye Thanks man. It hasn’t been easy for sure. I am happy where I am.

I am lucky that i inherited a great sense of business and finance from my mom and some amazing mechanical and; electrical knowledge from my dad.

Mayor George Wickens- Yellow(ing) Journalism- Lorain

Part One https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/11/12/mayor-george-wickens-buried-on-the-back-pages-lorain/

Geo Wickens 1898

Geo Wickens 1898

Thanks to Paula Shorf a younger image of George Wickens 1898
According to the “History of the First Methodist Church” Geo Wickens – History of The First Methodist Church 1856-1956, lorain

he had fiery red hair, long red moustache, bushy brows and an infectious grin indicated that things had to move fast when he took charge……..

George Wickens became Mayor when he was 42 -April 1894 and was immediately caught up in scandal.

“The Mayor’s Trouble” Within the past 24 hours a matter involving the good name of the Mayor of Lorain has arisen which the public will learn of with feelings of the keenest regret and deepest humiliation” Evening Herald June 1894

Charges against Mayor Wickens ” were the most serious that could be made” causing him in fact due to the charges against the Mayor caused him to have to withdraw from the church and the Rev. J.F. Smith has informed him [Wickens] that his services as Superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School will be no longer permitted

Whatever did George do- murder?? rape? incest? blackmail to be “thus pilloried without a trial”. The newspaper Evening Herald calling for him to be disgraced and his behavior disgusting or is this the politics of the day a Republican and Democrat go around in 1894.

Now George Wickens admits to being indiscreet but that the woman in question [Mida Pershing] magnified the “troubles” “the so-called scandalous story”

It seems, according to the report of the day, George Wickens hired a Miss Mida Pershing as a bookeeper for his business.[Wickens and Wilkins]- she stated that her duties were to take of the books and the Mayor’s docket.

Within a few weeks Mida resigned her position. and what followed according to the Evening Herald

it soon became whispered about there was a scandalous story to tell. It was related at first to a very few confidential friends, but soon spread , as was to be expected, like fire to an oil refinery……..

"The Evil Spirts of the Modern Day Press". Puck US magazine 1888; Nasty little printer's devils spew forth from the Hoe press in this Puck cartoon of Nov. 21, 1888.

“The Evil Spirts of the Modern Day Press”. Puck US magazine 1888; Nasty little printer’s devils spew forth from the Hoe press in this Puck cartoon of Nov. 21, 1888.

…..”interest in the scandalous story of the alleged improper conduct of Mayor Wickens toward Miss Mida Pershing, his bookkeeper, grows rather than diminishes with each succeeding day. Monday am at about 10 o’clock Mayor Wickens was formally charged under arrest on the charges od using obscene language in the presence of a female and of committing an assault.

When you read the full report by the Evening Herald , the article tries to set the tone of unbiased reporting, talking of letting the people make up their own minds whilst gleefully latching on and using the inflammatory language of the time to “sway public opinion whilst seeming “reporting the news even with the lead in

“The Evening Herald refers to the subject with the greatest reluctance but it seems best to state the facts and allow the people to form their own conclusions”

Ah seems history continues to repeat itself…………

Point of Sale , Lorain- A history – a result

taxpayerlorOld buildings have been much on my mind and that of the county in recent days and the legal options
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/lorain-county-judges-crowing-with-chandra/
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/chandra-cha-chinging-away-county-coffers-and-how-it-is-done/

Living in this , Lorain’s oldest neighborhood, I have watched the deterioration as bank dumped foreclosures were passed around and on and on until as perfectly reasonable homes that were built with pride are left abandoned to their fate.

buy swap sell

No longer, are they the homes they once were in this neighborhood but now a commodity , to be used and abused until they are no longer worth anything.

Some of our home-grown banks are the biggest culprits
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/07/09/the-pos-and-nuisance-ordinance-a-lesson-in-history/
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2013/07/05/the-nuisance-and-point-of-sale-ordinance-lorain/

The Point of Sale will cause some large numbers of “in escrow dollars” and one has hit the headlines in the Morning Journal and all the kerfuffle of Wurmser front etc .

http://www.morningjournal.com/general-news/20140620/lorain-house-sets-record-with-45750-escrow-requirement

wurmser wrecked

AHHHHH!!!!, yes! that house– the Wurmser House – the house of mystery , the house on the “historical inventory register” . You can read all about the “history mystery” of that house here
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/lorains-history-mystery-the-wurmser-house-a-tale-of-two-houses/

Let us look at what happened after the tornado– when Wurmser

Henry Oswald Wurmser was a respected architect in Lorain and renowned throughout the state. He was responsible for designing many churches, businesses and residences.

lost one house
Tornado-5th Wurmser

and gained another –the current featured front page news and “poster child ” for the realtors, banks and landlords……

You see this house , like so many others passed from “pride of home to Mr. Wurmser” ( the probably date for this house is after 1924) and his family , a sale or two ( without Point of Sale of course ) a couple of foreclosures more purchasers who lost until what we have now !

property search

from the MJ article

It appeared the home at 1348 W. Erie Ave. could have an escrow amount that is more than the house is worth.

The home is owned by the Federal National Mortgage Association, commonly known as Fannie Mae.

Oh dear Fannie Mae- well Fannie and her buddy Freddy have caused a lot of “bad happenings with the 2008 sub prime mortgages (MORT old English for “death”) and we can certainly GAGE that with Fannie and the banks.

In the years before the crisis, the behavior of lenders changed dramatically. Lenders offered more and more loans to higher-risk borrowers, including undocumented immigrants. Lending standards deteriorated particularly between 2004 and 2007, as the government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) mortgage market share (i.e. the share of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which specialized in conventional, conforming, non-subprime mortgages) declined and private securitizers share grew, rising to more than half of mortgage securitizations.

Dumped
https://thatwoman.wordpress.com/2012/07/11/banks-banking-on-lorain-business-of-blight-devaluing-lorain/

And another one bites the dust in Lorain and you can see the drooling of the realtors to find the “bone of contention” as proof point of sale isn’t working –

NOTE: I would like to point out the homes in the article have been empty and for sale for a few years BEFORE the January 1st Point of Sale Lorain came into being- couldn’t sell them then either could you?

“It’s not wonderful in any sense of the imagination,” Myers said. “We have properties we can just not sell now. Everybody just walks away because nobody wants to put that kind of money in a house in Lorain.”

IN LORAIN – or just in Lorain’s oldest neighborhoods????

You see Point of Sale “isn’t about this Lorain’s oldest neighborhood or even Ward two and the areas that have deteriorated from homes that held families once upon a time and now hold vagrants, vermin and are the shopping places for copper!

THE POINT of point of sale is to stop in the rest of Lorain, that hasn’t experienced yet the bank dumps and slip shod workmanship as these house are passed around between property pimps from happening in Lorain’s other neighborhoods .

The rot has to stop somewhere – painful as it is and then just maybe the tale of 3620 Clinton won’t be coming to your ward!

My Poster Child of flippers and entrepreneurs
The history of a second chance

3620-clifton-house

Lisa wrote about 3620 Clifton January 13th of 2013

http://bustershouse.wordpress.com/2013/01/13/as-seen-in-lorain-3620-clifton-avenue-and-the-second-chance/

http://bustershouse.wordpress.com/2013/06/16/whatever-happened-to-3620-clifton-avenue/

In that article, it was mentioned that the owners of one of the houses on the demolition list were given a second chance to make repairs. Even though it was noted by Demolition Board member, 5th ward Councilman, and neighborhood resident Eddie Edwards that “Before the sale, the house sat empty for about five years, with its doors and windows open and generally falling apart…” and “The new owners also waited a year before taking action to repair it…” AND the Board went out to see this house for themselves AND took the Fire Chief with them AND talked to the unhappy neighbors – the owners have $17,000 and a plan and that was enough for the Board to grant them a second chance.

“According to this article, “…owners of 3620 Clifton Ave. will get another five weeks to make repairs to that South Lorain home. For a second week, the condition of the structure sparked the most discussion in the demolition appeals board meeting.”

Demolition Board of Appeals meetings are held during the week and are impossible for me to attend. At the meeting held February 28, 2013, the owners were given another month to continue their work on the property. They were granted this extra time because they had roofed and secured the house, plus cleaned up the yard. [

So here we are ONE YEAR and Three Months later and the flip is apparently a flop…..(

No point of sale when this property was purchased….. the house is still “curvy “, “sagging” and not so cute , no electricity and obviously no tenants except of the groundhogs.

June 2014 Canon 318-1

ps 3620

POS is not to make these old neighborhoods better it basically is to stop Lorain’s newer neighborhoods from deteriorating as we have done.

Let us look at the history of the other houses mentioned in the article from the POS Morning Journal

• 330 Connecticut Ave., $12,925; the auditor’s value is $98,680.
330 Connecticut
Ps 330

3204 Garfield Blvd., $19,400; the auditor’s value is $44,420.

ps 3204

• 704 E. 32nd St., $28,300; the auditor’s value is $54,350.
This property is owned by NEW SUNRISE PROPERTIES – WHO OWN 28 OTHER PROPETIES IN AND AROUND THE COUNTY
704 32nd
nEW SUNRISE

• 1502 New Mexico Ave. has an escrow amount of $40,500; the auditor’s office valuation of the house is $36,000.

1502 New Mexico
This one is now owned NOW by Veterans Affairs ( another possible foreclosure???
ps veterans affairs

There we have it out of the 4 highest escrow accounts 2 are owned by the “mortgage holders” ( which brings to mind poor business practices of the sub prime) and one non-profit agency.

As they say the rest of the story!!!!!
